Scholarships for a Psychology Major

 

Don't let the cost of college prevent you from following your dream of becoming a psychologist. With the average cost of attending a public, four year college exceeding $12,000 per year as of 2010, it can be a daunting task trying to figure out how you can afford to follow your dream. It can be done, however, and with a little time and effort, you can find a number of potential funding sources through scholarship programs designed specifically for psychology majors or for undergraduate students in general.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Merit Scholarship

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Merit Scholarship is available to any full-time, currently enrolled student at an accredited campus based degree-granting university. The applicant must have sophomore standing or above and may only receive the scholarship for one year. Exceptional ability must be demonstrated by a GPA of 3.0 or above. Additionally, the student must be able to demonstrate community service and involvement. Award ranges for the year 2010 are from $1000 to $2000.

Psi Chi/Allyn and Bacon Award

The Psi Chi/Allyn & Bacon Psychology Awards are sponsored by Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology and Allyn & Bacon Publishers. The award is open to all undergraduate members of Psi Chi. Award decisions are based on who submits the best empirical research papers. Awards for 2010 range in value from $350 to $1000.

APS Summer Research Grants

The American Psychology Association Summer Research Grants are co-funded by Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and provide an undergraduate psychology student the opportunity to conduct summer research with an APS sponsor. Six awards are given out in total. As of 2010, a stipend of $3500 is given to the student with another $1500 going to the APS sponsor.

Coca Cola Scholars Program

The Coca Cola Scholars program is open to any high school senior, however the application must be submitted before October 31st. A total of 250, four-year scholarships are awarded based on the student's achievements. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA to apply. Awards for 2010 were $10,000 for a Regional Scholar and $20,000 for a National Scholar.
