States of Consciousness: A Multiple-Choice Quiz and Study Guide for Students and Homeschoolers Preparing for College

What Are the States of Consciousness?

  • It may be hard to believe, but the exact function of sleep is unknown. There are, however, theories, such a the repair/restoration theory which says that the sleep is necessary for its physical and psychological restorative value. There is also the evolutionary/circadian theory which says that sleep has adaptive value.
  • Sleep is controlled by various areas of the brain, but most of our time is spent awake, aware and conscious of our surroundings. That state is called consciousness, and the other times when we sleep, daydream or have fantasies are called "alternate states of consciousness." Hypnosis and meditation, along with chemically-induced changes due to psychoactive drugs are also alternate states.
  • This is a multiple-choice quiz on various states of consciousness that you would study in one individual chapter of psychology in college. Take the quiz to find out how much you already know, then take it over and over until you have learned it all. You will be surprised how much help this will be when you study states of consciousness in psychology.
  • This test covers understanding consciousness, the stages of sleep, theories of sleep and dreaming, sleep disorders, hypnosis and meditation. Good luck.
