Stem And Leaf Diagrams. How To Draw A Stem And Leaf Diagram (Easy Method With Examples)

A stem and leaf diagram can be used to represent a list of data values. Let’s take a look at a couple of examples of drawing a stem and leaf diagram.

Example 1

Draw a tree diagram to represent these pupils maths results (10 people in total):

67%, 68%, 52%, 72% 70%, 53%, 65%, 72%, 83%, 69%

First of all rearrange the data set as this will make it easier to record when you draw the stem and leaf diagram:

52%, 53%, 65%, 67%, 68%, 69%, 70%, 72%, 72%, 83%

Now, the data set contains number in the fifties to numbers in the eighties. So put the numbers 5,6,7 and 8 down the stem column.

The last digit of each test score will go in the leaf part of the diagram. So to record 52% and 53% put 2 and 3 in the row containing numbers in the fifties. Next record 65%, 67% 68% and 69% by putting 5,7,8 and 9 in the sixties row. Next record 70%, 72% and 72% by putting 0,2 and 2 in the seventies row. Finally, record 83% by putting the 3 in the eighties row. There is no need to put comma’s between each recorded number (just leave a space).

The final thing to do now is to add a key to your tree diagram. You do this by explaining what one of the numbers represents in the stem and leaf diagram. Let’s pick the first test score:

Key 5|2 = 52%.

It’s important to do this because 5|2 could mean 5.2 or 502.

The final stem and leaf diagram is shown in the picture including the key.

Example 2

Draw a tree diagram to represent these running times of 12 athletes who took part in a race (all times recorded are in minutes).

12,25,13,12,17,26,24,25,24,24,18,17

First of all rearrange the data set as this will make it easier to record when you draw the stem and leaf diagram:

12,12,13,17,17,18,24,24,24,25,25,26

Now, the data set contains number in the tens to numbers in the twenties. So put the numbers 1 and 2 in the stem part.

The last digit of each test score will go in the leaf part of the diagram. So to record 12,12,13,17,17,18 put 2,2,3,7,7 and 8 in the row containing numbers in the tens. Next record 24,24,24,25,25,26 by putting 4,4,4,5,5 and 6 in the twenties row.

The final thing to do now is to add a key to your tree diagram.

Key 1|2 = 12 minutes

The final stem and leaf diagram is shown in the picture including the key.
