Strange (but Funny) Phobias

Strange but Funny Phobias

Who could be scared by this sweet face? Me.
Who could be scared by this sweet face? Me. | Source

Phobias are like opinions: Everybody has at least one. I have three:

  • Boogers (any type of nasal/oral musus) - Blennophobia
  • June Bugs - Entophobia
  • Clowns - Coulrophobia

These things scare me from the most to the least, in that order, and each one has a story.

Every day, people around the world deal with all sorts of strange and sometimes life-inhibiting phobias. The symptoms often include: anxiety, shortness of breath, increased heart rate, nausea, and so on.

Below you will find a list of 50 different phobias in no particular order; some common, uncommon, and just downright funny. Which one belongs to you?

These are really funny! My favorites are probably:

Phronemophobia - Fear of thinking and Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (wowzie, what a word!) - Fear of 666

Thanks for informing us about all these different phobias. I know someone who has a fear of balloons, which is another funny one. ;)

Thanks for the feedback Pam! I have never heard of anyone with a fear of balloons. I'll have to research that one and add it to the list! Thanks again!

Jonathan 7 years ago

A really ironic way to express 'the fear of words' is (basically) an elongation of Sesquipedalophobia is HIPPOPOTOMONSTROSESQUIPEDALOPHOBIA.The ironic part about it is that it's the longest word in the English dictionary. I just thought it was funny... Enjoy! :D

Jonathan 7 years ago

Sorry, i meant to say

"a really ironic way to express 'the fear of LONG* words'...

i have a deep fear of dark place imma nyctophobic..im afraid to go out at night unless im with lots of ppl i know

Shay Bug 6 years ago

I'm afraid of things that camouflage. I'm afraid that there are things hidden everywhere I can't see, and they blend into what I'm used to. Like there are dangerous things hiding and blending into the places I consider safe, for instance my bedroom. That's the best that I can explain it.

No, I'm not afraid of people wearing camouflage clothing. It isn't the same thing. However, I do not like to wear it. And on a subconscious level, I sometimes find it difficult to trust people who wear it. As if they are communicating to me by dressing that way that they have a reason to hide.

Ms. psychology 4 years ago

Happy LATE birthday G.G :) I think that Cypridophobia is a pretty funny one, The fear of prostitutes! Also geniophobia, a fear of chins(: I have yet to meet anyone with either of these phobias, but one that I have realized is very common is Agoraphobia, Which is the fear of leaving a safe place, fear of being in large open spaces, and a lot of times patients with Agoraphobia also have a fear of Panic attacks, or a panic disorder.

Hahahahha lmfao xD

I have a phobia, but not like these o.o

It's

Helminthophobia: fear of worms; fear of being infested by them.

The fear of good news and smells sound funny but strange o.o

yet i keep thinking how the fear of step mom has something to do with fear of mother-in-law.

Oh well.

Nice ones, plus, your dad's fear is not so weird, people were not used to computers back :]

Anon 4 years ago

Doesn't all this seem funny? Like, really. It almost sounds like people are coming up with excuses for everyday life, hahahaha. A fear of full stops? What is that? You can't take your foot off the gas? So, if you hit a child when driving you think your phobia of full stops is gonna be used as an excuse in court?

Anon 4 years ago

A fear of your mother in law? Lmao. I wonder how they come up with this shit. A fear of bowel movements? People don't poop now? Let me guess, that would lead to a fear of being unhealthy right, lol. A fear of staying single sounds like someone can't get enough sex in their life.

Anon 4 years ago

So, does a fear of good news mean someone is always living a bad life?

Haha 4 years ago

These were all very very funny and interesting. Thanks for the info! my favorite was 38.Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia - Fear of the number "666" and one i found in the coments, hippopotomonstrosisquippidaliophobia

I'm 16 years old. I feel like most of the people who have commented here and are saying they have some of these phobias are saying it in a very lighthearted sense (and I'm not saying everyone here isn't serious, just a lot).

Phobias are very real, and a lot of them are irrational. I have a fear of beetles, specifically June bugs. I acknowledge how incredibly irrational my fear is, but I can't help it.

When I hear a June bug, I flail and run and have this weird primal /need/ to get as far away as humanly possible. One time my step-dad put one in my hair because he thought it would be "funny."

It was not funny.

I screamed and it got caught in my hair, buzzing and whatnot, and I fell to the ground and started hyperventilating and for a few terrifying seconds, I could not breathe.

When there are June bugs on the porch when we come home, someone has to open the door so that I can stand far away and then run as fast as I can through the door.

I cannot explain what it feels like to have an irrational fear like this, and if you don't have one then I doubt you'll ever experience the hopeless kind of panic and fear that I (or others with similar irrational phobias) do.

And probably the worst part is trying to explain it to people who don't believe you. People who don't share your fear will NEVER understand. My mother doesn't believe or comprehend my June bug fear. She thinks that I'm "just being silly" and that "I need to get over it because they're harmless."

WELL DUH I KNOW THEY'RE HARMLESS! That's part of why it's an IRRATIONAL fear!

One time I refused to go outside with the family and eat dinner, because there were a bunch of the beetles buzzing around the table. I absolutely refused to take a step outside. My mother thought that I was just being a little snooty, and she got real mad at me. She yelled at me, thinking that I just wanted to stay inside and play my video games. I cried afterwards, utterly hopeless because I couldn't (and still can't) explain to her how very real this phobia is.

So yes, some of these phobias might seem strange to you, but for the people who have them it's very, very real. That said, try not to laugh too much, and don't carelessly toss around the phobias. Just because you don't like work, that doesn't mean you're afraid of doing it. And in some cases, it can almost be offensive (I know I'd be a little miffed if someone flicked a June bug off themselves and said, "yuck! I'm so scared of these things!" and then casually went about business. Because in my case, there would be no intelligible words, just shrieks and flailing arms.)

If it helps for anyone reading this, I'm a girl, have a recorded IQ of 141 (so smart people have fears too, you know), and have been recently diagnosed with situational depression.

I know this thread is really old, but I just wanted to put my share of opinion here haha.

(Also please disregard typos, as I am typing from my phone. Thanks.)

Celeste 15 months ago

Ya I second this^

Phobias are not "fears". They are irrational, debilitating aversions to something. They are a psychological handicap.

Celeste 15 months ago

And they really aren't like opinions at all. But I get that this post is a joke. Just saying.

Gabethegamefreak 10 months ago

I have Automatonophobia! The fear of inanimate objects coming to life. Five nights at Freddy's much?
