The Amazing Dinosaur

Dinosaurs ruled the earth for millions of years and they have fascinated people young and old for centuries. There have been movies made about them that have been very popular.

In 1676 Robert Plot who was the curator of an English Museum made a drawing of what he believed was a giant man's thigh bone. The original bone disappeared and was never found.

Mary Ann Mantell and her husband discovered large teeth in 1822 that she believed belonged to an iguana species that was extinct.

n 1841 Richard Owen from Britain discovered that the teeth and bones were different from any living creature of the time. They were so different, he though they should have their own name so he called them “Dinosauris.” which means “terrible lizards.”

In the 1800's bones were discovered for 136 different species and this made everyone interested in dinosaurs. This interest is still going on today.

The Giganotosaurus Dinosaur

Giganotosaurus means “giant southerner lizard.” These huge dinosaurs were meat eaters. They ate cretaceous dinosaurs.

They lived 97 million years ago during the late cretaceous period.

The Giganotosaurus is the largest meat eating dinosaur found so far. They are larger than T. Rex but not as large as the Spinosaurus.

They are very large, but their brain was small. They are classified as a Saurischis dinosaur. They were 40 feet long and weighed 13 tons.

It is believed these large dinosaurs preyed on large plant eaters like the Titanosaur. They are believed to have had a very good sense of smell. They had shorter and narrower teeth than the T. Rex. Their teeth were good for slicing flesh. It is believed they hunted in packs.

Fossils of the Giganotosaurus have been found in Argentina.

The Iguanodon Dinosaur

The Iguanodon was a fairly large dinosaur. It is believed they were about 30 feet long and weighed around 10,000 pounds. They were around 16 feet tall. It is believed they walked on 2 feet and 2 arms. Their hands had 4 fingers and a spike that was cone shaped. Their legs were larger than their arms, and they had a long stiff tail. They had both a beak and teeth.

It is believed they were a herding creature and ate plants. They were small compared to some other plant eating animals of the time. They would chew their plants with their teeth.

The Iguanodon lived about 125 million years ago during the cretaceous period. There have been fossils found on several continents. In Belgium, many bones were found in the same area, suggesting they were herding animals and lived in groups.

The Ornithomimus Dinosaur

The Ornithomimus ate animals and plants so they are called omnivores. Their name means “bird mimic.” They probably ate eggs, insects, plants and small Cretaceous animals.

Their dinosaur classification is Therooda. They lived in the Cretaceous period 75 to 65 million years ago. There were many dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous period.

They have long beaks and no teeth. They used their scissor like beak to chop their food. Some scientist believe they resembled a kangaroo with feathers. It is believed they were fast runners. It is thought they could reach speeds of 40 mph.

There have been fossils found in North America and Mongolia. The fossils that have been found are all different sizes. It is believed they averaged 13 to 16 feet and weighed 158.8 kg.

The Pachycephalosaurus Dinosaur

The Pachycephalosaurus had a very thick top on their head. It measured 10 inches thick. They would use their head to ram animals in combat. They had dull spikes around the thick bone on their head.

The Pachycephalosaurus was medium size and walked on 2 legs. They were about 15 feet long and weighed 750 to 1,000 pounds.

The Pachycephalosaurus had very small teeth, so it is thought they ate berries, leaves and soft shrubs. It is not believed this dinosaur was a meat eater.

It is thought the Pachycephalosaurus was a herding animal. It is thought they probably used their thick skull to show dominance in the group, The probably did not move very fast.

Their name means “beside crested lizard.”

The Parasaurolophus's mouth looked like a ducks bill.

The lived in the cretaceous period 76 to 73 million years ago. They were plant eaters. This was during the same time as the meat eaters Alberlosaurus and Veloceraptors.

They had an unusual tail that was long but narrow. It appears they were bright colored. Their head ha a large crest on it that was probably up to 16 feet long. Scientist believe the crest made trumpet sounds they used to talk to each other.

They were herbivores and they stood on their strong back legs to reach the branches that were higher up. It is believed they were 33 feet long and weighed 3.5 tons.

The Plateosaurus was a prosauropod which is a group of dinosaurs who were related to the sauropods who came later. They were omnivorous. One of Europe’s most common dinosaurs was the Plateosaurus. Their fossils have been found in 50 different formations.

Half of the Plateosaurus body length was made up by their tail. They are 27 feet long. They were the largest of the prosauropods. They had a thick head, and their thumb had a claw in it.

The Plateosaurus was a plant eater, so they probably traveled in herds. They probably kept their young in the center of the herd to protect them from danger.

The Plesiosaurus Dinosaur

The Plesiosaurus was a large aquatic animal that lived during the cretaceous time. It is believed they were 23 meters long, and this is very large for a sea creature. They lived during the dinosaur age, and they were a very successful reptile.

The Plesiosaurus had 4 large flippers and a very long neck. Their jaws were very strong. They ate squid and giant mollusks. They were probably the largest aquatic carnivore. Because of their large size they probably did not swim very fast.

The Plesiosaurus lived 65 million years ago during the cretaceous period. There have been several Plesiosaurus fossils found along the coast of England.

They are not a dinosaur but a sauropleryglan.

The Protoceratops was a small dinosaur. The Protoceratops was around 7 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Their legs were the same size and is thought they walked on all fours. The back of their neck had frills on it. The males frills were longer than those of the female. The Protoceratops weighed about 900 pounds. They had a neck that resembled a present day turtle.

The Protoceratops ate plants. They seemed to travel in groups. If they did not stay in groups, they would have been easy prey. Just about their only defense was their sharp beak. They were preyed on by the Velociraptor.

The female would lay her eggs near a pond in the sand. The Protoceratops lived 80 million years ago during the cretaceous period. There have been many fossils found in Mongolia. This is where it is believed most of them lived.

A fossil of a Protoceratops and a Velociraptor were found together in Mongolia, and it is believed they had been fighting.

The Pterodactylus Dinosaur

Pterodactylus translates to winged lizard. Dinosaur means animals that walk on land. The Pterodactyl was a mammal, but it was a flying reptile. Their wings were attached to the fourth finger of their arms. Sometimes their wings were 40 feet long.

They made their home in trees and caves near the sea. They ate large insects. They were very fast at flying with the help of the leathery material that covered their arms. It is believed they were the only flying reptile living during the dinosaur era. Their wings were not like the wings of birds. They had 4 fingers, and 3 of them went down half way on the wing. The 4th finger went to the end of the wing.

The Pterodactylus lived during the cretaceous and Jurassic times. Their fossils have been found all over Europe, North America, Australia and Africa.

The Quetzalcoatlus Life Retoration

The Quetzalcoatlus was an amazing reptile. They were the largest flying creatures to have ever existed. Their hollow bones and small body were light so they could fly even though they were quite large.

They were a kind of reptile known as the pterosaurs. Many different pterosaurs lived when the dinosaurs lived.

The Quetzalcoatlus lived 70 to 65.5 million years ago in the cretaceous period.

Some scientists believe they could have used their folded wings as legs and walked on all fours.

Some scientists believe their eating habits were like those of vultures. They believe they swooped down to eat the carcasses. There are also scientists that believe they waded and probed in the sand and mud looking for fish, crabs and worms.

A Quetzalcoatlus skeleton was found in the Big Bend National Park in Texas, USA. Other fossils have been found in Alberta, Middle East, Africa and Russia.

Their wingspan was 22 feet. When they were flying, their wingspan was 26 feet. Their beak was 5 to 6 feet long.

The Spinosaurus Dinosaur

The Spinosaurus is said to have been the largest meat eating dinosaur. Their body was 50 feet long and 20 feet tall making them larger than the Tyrannosaurus Rex. It is believed they weighed about 18,000 pounds. They had a large spine protruding out of their back. These spines had the appearance of a sail. They walked on 2 feet. Their arms were quiet small, but they were longer than most dinosaurs.

The Spinosaurus's head was big. They had 2 rows of teeth that were not serrated. Their teeth allowed them to tear their prey apart. It is believed the Spinosaurus was smarter than the other Dinosaurs.

Fossils of the Spinosaurus have been found around Egypt and in Africa. They have discovered the remains of a Iguanodon inside of a Spinosaurus. They lived 95 million years ago in the cretaceous period.

The Spinosaurus was a vicious creature, and they could probably take down the huge herbivores of the period with no problem.

The Stegosaurus Dinosaur

The Stegosaurus is 30 feet long and 15 feet tall. They usually weighed around 6,000 pounds. They had large shield shaped plates that protruded from their back. The plates are staggered down their body. They have a high arched back. They have a small head and brains. It is believed their brain was the size of a walnut. They had spikes on the end of their tail tat helped protect them against predators.

The Stegosaurus was a plant eater. They had to eat a lot of plants to get the nutrients they needed. They probably spent most of their time finding food.

They were big and had stocky legs so they could not have moved very fast. They had a small stride. They probably traveled in packs.

The Stegosaurus lived 145 to 155 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Fossils have been found in many states in the United States. Footprints have been found in Australia, and they were later stolen from Australia.

The Triceratops Dinosaurus

The word Triceratops means “three horned face.” The Triceratops had 2 horns that were quiet large that were located on the top of their head. There was a third horn located on the top of their beak. They had a frill that was located behind the 2 back horns. Their frill was like a shield of bone above their head. They were about 10 feet high and 30 feet long. Sometimes their skulls were 10 feet long. It I believed they weighed around 12 tons. They had 4 feet that resembled stumps, and it is believed they were slow only being able to run around 15mph.

They ate plants and shrubs. They were able to eat tougher plants because of their strong beak. They were able to defend themselves with their horns. The Triceratops moved around in groups looking for food.

The Triceratops lived 70 million years ago during the late cretaceous period. The Ankylosaurus, Corythosaurus, Drytosaurus and Tyrannosaurus all lived at the same time as the Triceratops. The majority of the Triceratops fossils have been found in Western North America.

The Triceratops has been named the official state dinosaur of Wyoming. They are the official fossil of South Dakota.
