The Immune System Part II

You need to be aware! What is my food?

Do you know what you are eating?

 

In our last Hub, we mentioned that our personal "lifestyle habits" are the major cause of suppressing the immune system. Today, we're going to expose a few of the long-term habits that can help weaken the immune system. As mentioned in Part I, this doesn't take place overnight, it's the collective use of misuse of these habits and long term abuse all working in combination that eventually compromise the immune system.

Where does the abuse begin?

It all begins with the food we eat, the over the counter or prescription drugs we take and the emotional stress we deal with on the day-to-day bases that we call living.

Lets begin with the food we eat. We believe that here in America, we have the best food available in the entire world. Not only that, we believe that we have the most nutritious food in the marketplace. We also believe that we have the safest food available in the entire world. Wrong! In truth, we are the most overfed and undernourished people on the planet.

 

But don't we have the most beautiful, bountiful food in the world?

Why? Why might you ask? Why would I make such a statement when we have the most attractive, most beautiful, most bountiful stores, markets, supermarkets and specialty food markets of any country in the world? Not to mention the multitude of "sugar shacks" on every corner, on every cross road USA. These quickie stores that we call "sugar shacks" are used for a quick fill up (gas), coffee and donut or whatever quick fix we need, because we're always running late and just haven't scheduled a proper lunch or dinner in our precious day planner. That's our Lifestyle!!!

What is causing this mess?

I mention "sugar shacks" because there are very few foods in our stores, in our supermarkets, that aren't loaded with sugar, preservatives, artificial colors and/or artificial sweeteners added to everything on the shelves.

To add to the mess, we have processed most of the nutrients out of the food, we have increased our fat intake, decreased the amount of fiber in our diet and added these harmful ingredients and chemicals just to make them last longer and look prettier on the shelf.

Surprise number one!

Surprise number one, if you haven't figured it out by now, would be sugar. Sugar, by design, is in just about everything we eat. Think about this ...100 grams of refined sugar reduces the function of the white blood cells to destroy bacteria by 50%, after two hours of eating sugar. The average American consumes about 150 mg of sucrose everyday in addition to all the other refined sugars that have been, by design, added to our food source.

So, why should I care about sugar?

When we eat sugar, the immune system is compromised and weakened.

When we eat sugar, the bloodstream is always saturated with sugar, and this in turn produces large amounts of insulin, which suppresses the production of growth hormones, which is the important regulator of the immune system. In addition to being an immune system suppressant, sugar is also one of the major causes of obesity, which is out of control in this country.

 

Are you saying it is not good for me?

With a list of 100's of reasons why sugar destroys our health, I will mention just a few.

  • Sugar can suppress the immune system.
  • Sugar causes hyperactivity and difficulty of concentration in children.
  • Sugar can lead to cancer of the prostate, ovaries, breast, colon and rectum.
  • Sugar can lead to alcoholism, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, asthma, appendicitis, colitis, Crohn's Disease, high blood pressure, hemorrhoids, migraine headaches, obesity, osteoporosis, tooth decay, stress, and ulcers and the list goes on.

Isn't it plain to see why the immune system is weakened? And this is only the beginning. If you can relate to any of these health conditions ...check your sugar consumption.

Do you know that sugar is harder to kick the habit with than alcohol ...yes ..it is true. And if you have some idea what alcohol can do to your system ..well sugar can do the same or more. Thank you newcapo for stopping by and leaving a comment. My best to your health and success with hubpages!

Lisa McGrimmon ...As they say better before it is too late ...or "It is never too late" ...either way best you have started. There are a lot of things to address when changing you choices of food and lifestyle habits.

Thanks for the helpful information. I became serious about my health, particularly what I'm putting in my body several months ago. When you're not really thinking about your choices, your bad choices can add up pretty quickly. It's really not that hard to make little changes a step at a time.

Thank you desert blondie ...I agree about the dangers of the chemicals it takes to keep them looking so perfect!!  The real crime of this is we are not told what is on those beautiful fruits.  From MSG to Formaldehyde ..not a pretty picture.  Personally I prefer organic when available.  I try not to be tempted by the beautiful look of the fruit. 

I remember when I was a kid, we ate the apples from our tree in the back yard and the worms liked them too ...now I know what a good sign that was.

Such good information! My personal goal is to shop the outer rim of the grocery...where the fresh foods, dairy products and meats are...staying away from anything bagged or boxed. But even "fresh" foods have their dangers...all the chemicals it takes to keep them looking so 'perfect'! Eager to read part 3!

compu-smart ...thank you for stopping by ...and I would not kick you. We all need a kick now and then ...some more than others.

My only feelings are that I love life and want to be here for my grandchildren and as far as I can go ...and I don't want to depend on Meds to do it ....as we all know what the side effects are. It is interesting ...people will run to the doctor and cry about how they feel, but won't take the time to research theirself.

Yes ...I know how difficult it is to realize that we need to do something about what we eat. And it is hard to shop at first. It has to be a mind set. When I first started to look for food that I felt would be safe, it was so hard and long. (They know it). It was so tempting to just grab the usual and leave the store.

I guess the first time I made up my mind, I really decided to do this thing ...I went to the store late at night and started to read. First I decided what I did not want to eat (as far as preservatives, hormones, and antibiotics) and then began. When I finally found what looked like it was safe enough, I put it on my list of things to buy. My list was small, but really all of the food is near the outside of the grocery stores.

By demand of the people, we finally have more organic food in the stores. The USDA got involved, but really it is better if you have more than one aprove the product.

I now know what to buy and how to get my sweet fix taken care of naturally. Believe me it takes 21 days to break the sugar habit. White refined sugar is the worst. No minerals to help digest it while it robs you body of important nutrients ... And White refined flour ...also turns to sugar. Remember when we make paste with it when you were a kid?

And as far as crime against humanity ..I believe there is a group that is pushing for this. (Dr. Rath) Being aware is the safest way to help yourself.

Hi gj now i know why i have the problems I have hypertension high blood pressure are just some of the problems I have your right they been altering the food to preserve it and make it more attractive but i was wondering is how will it ever change i mean all food has lethal doss of sugar in it the nation is the most over fed and undernourished in the world Ive tried reading the labels at the stores to try and buy food that's less sugar less sodium but I would be in there all day Do you think that this might be considered a crime against humanity one day in the future because of whats being done at these processing plants so they can preserve the product and make it more attractive on the store shelve.No of course not I will check out immune system No.l ~cool~cya

Chaser ....glad to hear from you again. Yes ...I want as many people as I can help become award ..so they can just evaluate for theirself. It takes an open mind and then when it clicks in ...look out Loretta!!!! You never look at "sugar shacks" the same ...nor do you look at food the same. It is amazing that some of the things we call food is actually chemicals ...at least most of it. If people would read the labels, they would see that they can't even pernounce the words! Now how can we call that food? ...but we do!

Shadesbreath ...I would say I believe it but who really knows....I have a close friend that told me (her husband is in the funeral business) that it is not so necessary to do the bodies as fast as they do not break down as fast as they used to. Hey ...check out the youtube videos about McDonalds ...I think the fries could last for your lifetime and mine. Interesting about Jenny Craig ..scary ...I hear stories all the time about things like this. We definitely need to know these things.

If I wasnt' so totally undisciplined, I would jump on this excellent advice. To be honest, I had no idea sugar was THAT bad. It's scary how bad the food we get in America is.

You want to hear something scary on the subject of "preservatives"... someone I know closely (no, not me - as if I would go on a diet) was doing Jenny Craig for a long time and, after losing a ton of weight and carrying on with the program for over a year.... she was told by her councelor basically, "Um, you've been eating this stuff long enough. Make your own food now. You know this stuff is full of preservatives, right?"

I was totally shocked.

Heard another thing, maybe you can confirm or deny.. but I read once that a battlefield was come across during the Vietnam war several long, hot days after the fight was done, and the dead American bodies were less than half as decomposed as the Vietnemese soldiers were, purely due to the preservatives in the food they ate respectively. And that was 30 + years ago.

Don't forget that our own thoughts effect our immune system as well. Depression kills our immune system and I truly believe that I don't get sick because I truly believe that I don't get sick. Great hub full of information that I haven't seen a hundred times elsewhere.
