The Law of Attraction is not only Wrong; But Evil

"The Secret" is a Dangerous Book

In 2007, for the first time in history, the world's best selling book for a given year was neither the Bible nor the Koran. The profitable piece of literature is titled "The Secret," written by Rhonda Byrne, who also produced a film under the same title.

Searching on the Internet reveals that law of attraction websites mirror in controversy, subject matter, and discussion only behind that of Christianity, Islam, and atheism. I would go on to say "the movement" has become a religion in its own right. If you're a vivid YouTube junkie, you can't help but to accidentally stumble across personal law of attraction videos. The law of attraction, and "The Secret," have been actively promoted on day time television shows such as Oprah and Doctor Phil. The growing popularity of the law of attraction is unquestionable; however it's philosophies and results it has brought to the world leave much to be desired, and should be questioned.

The basic premise behind "The Secret" is that you are what you've attracted. That is to say; what comes to you is the result of your vibrational energy that you're releasing. The idea that you can use energy for healing purposes is certainly nothing new and isn't a secret. In fact, it's the basic foundation of ancient Chinese medicine, called "Chi." The Secret takes this concept a few steps further though. Rather than making the film what I at first thought could be an educational piece of material towards alternative medicine, The Secret suggests that you can achieve all of your heart's passions and desires through sheer thought, willpower, and positive thinking alone. Ironically enough, the film directs us on a low level energy materialistic plain that a part of my ethnicity would consider "bad medicine." Immediately, the film is contradicting their opening hypothesis. Not that I have anything against the acquisition of material wealth, however I can tell you from experience that focusing on the stuff you want isn't the best way to eventually acquire it. While such thinking on the short term may feel good; long term, you're leading yourself astray down a path of envy, disappointment, and emptiness.

The book also touts the virtues of visualizing your goals, a concept which I agree with, however the methods suggested are self-destructive. There exists no discussion in The Secret as to how a visionary can go about achieving his or her goals. In actuality, it's just the opposite, goal setting and planning is considered unattractive to the philosophy of the Secret because they believe it will "limit you."

The film and book also comes across as deceitful. One of the opening arguments is that there is a conspiracy amongst the wealthy and successful to keep "The Secret" hidden from the general public. The film then goes on to explain that for the first time in history, "The Secret" will be revealed to the public due to the virtuous psyche of the film producers. This demonstrated arrogance is blatantly false. This again represents a contradiction; if the wealthy became successful due to their energetic vibrations and positive thinking, how could it be kept in secret? Wouldn't they have to release this positive energy amongst the people and share such knowledge in order to benefit from it? How can they be attracting material through positive thinking if they keep the positive thinking amongst themselves? The theory is inconsistent.

In addition, it's false to state that the wealthy kept the knowledge amongst themselves in the past. While making the argument that The Secret is a conspiracy, the film shows a cut scene reminiscent of a 1940s human factory. I'm not going to pretend the world was a beautiful place in the 1940s, but as someone who has read a fair share of books from around that time period, I can tell you the wealthy were by far more open and practical in explaining to the general public how they achieved their success in contrast to today. Today, the wealthy (in general) come across as far more obscure and secretive as to how they achieved their success.

In the end, rich people are no different than other human beings. Some are social and want to tell the world their lives (and thus how they achieved their success), some are more private, and most rest somewhere in between only revealing bits and pieces. There's no "conspiracy amongst the rich" of the past to horde the knowledge that's "finally being revealed today." This is simply misinformation.

I could spend several hours listing the inaccuracies in the law of attraction philosophy and its biggest advocates, but disproving its scholastic merit is hardly my gravest concern. My biggest worry is that the philosophy is not only wrong; but harmful and dangerous to people.

Several Reasons Why "The Secret" Will Cause You Harm

1. This book will make you poor: It's ironic that a year after The Secret became world's best seller; the world subsequently went through the largest market collapse since The Great Depression in America (or The Great Hyperinflation in Germany depending on your perspective). Following the law of attraction's philosophies, more people believed in "the power of positive thinking" than ever before, therefore wealth should have miraculously increased by virtue of all the "positive energy" flowing around. Yet (barring a few exceptions) we all became poorer. Why?

Because we took positive thinking to the extreme. The philosophy of "just think about it long enough, hard enough, and it will be there" isn't reality. We must go out there and contribute something meaningful and productive to the world if we want to get ahead. At this present date, we have many people who want to get rich without having to work. They want to become an aristocracy. This is what "The Secret" is truly about; it appeases greatly to such individuals. The stock market is but a mere physical manifestation of people following the law of attraction. The abomination was created in part because many people dreamed of striking it rich by not having to lift a finger. Television shows of optimistic "economists" ran amok. And look where it led us? The truth of the matter is any market can only exist through the benefit of the productive; not the dreamers.

The fact of the matter is if you go into the world with the mentality of just dreaming to acquire stuff, money, hot women, hot men, etc. you'll be too focused on the stuff; and won't come up with any strategies on how to get there. Believe me, this mentality will make you file for bankruptcy every time.

2. This book will make you unkind: This book teaches you that there is no such thing as bad luck. This book teaches you to shun away from people that are less fortunate, arguing that they deserve it through rejecting the law of attraction. If you can't see the clever use of "self fulfilling prophecy" methods used by the authors in order to sell their ideas, you're truly daft. In addition, is dismissing people completely out of hand dispensing negative energy? I would say so. This book makes you lose your empathy; and shuts down potential doors people may have to offer you, had you not been so unkind. Your lack of empathy will squander opportunities you may have had to learn from all people, whether it's the homeless man on the street to all the way up to the C.E.O. Your mind becomes closed, rather than open.

3. This book will make you lose your humour: No longer can you simply laugh at all the bad things that may happen to you. Your capacity to shrug things off; and make use of a little harmless dark humour, dissipates when you take the philosophy of this book literally. The book instructs all that happens to you is the result of vibrational energy that you're attracting. This can lead to unhealthy paranoia as you introspectively contemplate how each and every inconvenience throughout your day may have been attracted. Because the law of attraction doesn't believe in randomness, you can no longer laugh at any randomness that may occur.

4. This book will make you unjust: Because you believe all that occurs to people is due to the law of attraction, there's no reason to burden yourself with thoughts of creating a just and equitable world. You're in the "blame the victim" mode. That woman who got raped, surely she must have attracted it? Those people in Japan who got nuked, surely it must have happened due to lack of positive thinking? Those kids who got senselessly killed in Norway, they were obviously debating politics, which isn't positive thinking, and therefore they deserved what was coming to them!

If I desired to be the world's most brutal dictator, I would broadcast The Secret video on every TV station, running 24/7. I would condition the people to psychologically accept the fact that everything is a result of their own thoughts and manifestations. Once the conditioning is complete, I would then unleash my dogs of war and subjugate them to brutal labour camps under the whip and a taser gun. The people shall not rebel, instead they will believe what's happening to them is the result of not having enough positive thinking. Not only will there no revolutions, but the guards may prove completely unnecessary. The moment a single slave speaks out against me, the mob will then tell him to shut up because it's not positive speech craft.

This book will make you unjust. Spending your time and energy to defend justice, and to combat injustice, is just too damn negative!

5. This book will make you treasonous: The book encourages you to separate yourself from people who you consider "too negative." This includes your friends and family. This is by it's very nature; treason. While there is something to be said for removing bad influences in your life, the idea of completely dismantling yourself from people who don't fully believe in this dogma is harsh.

The book teaches you to see relationships as a giant candy dispenser. If the wife is too sad or going through some rough times, get a new one! If that kid is being annoying because he's going through puberty, find another single woman, with another kid, and get a new family! If your friends don't feel like partying all night and just want to discuss their day to day problems, find another group of friends! If the boss is being a jerk because he’s had a rough day, quit that job that has worked for ten years; and gets a new one! If that reliable and hard working employee doesn't come to work everyday with a smile, fire her, and get a new employee!

6. This book will make your body suffer in sickness: This book is dangerous to your health. It contains several examples of people healing from cancer through positive thinking alone. It shows people with paralysis suddenly walking because they dreamed of walking. This is pure myth. Positive thinking has its effects in recovering from illness, however I fear this book may cause many people to skip going through the hardships and sacrifices necessary in order to get proper medical treatments. Why bother going through a painful rehabilitation program, if you can just think your way out of it? This is dangerous thinking for your health.

7. This book will make your mind suffer in sickness: This book is a danger to your sanity. Anything bad that happens to you, you'll believe it's the result of not trying hard enough to utilize the law of attraction. You could very well slip into a clinical depression or worse, even become suicidal. While your own confidence level is shot because you're busy blaming yourself for any misery that befalls you; your lack of empathy, kindness, treasonous nature, and apathy towards justice may lead you to become psychopathic.

Did you know that when Bob Proctor, one of the leading spokespeople for The Secret, was asked how the laws of attraction apply to the poor suffering children in Darfur going through genocide, he responded with the following: "This happened to the children in Darfur due to the lack of positive thinking." This is madness!

8. This book will make you undisciplined: Any moron can be positive when things are going swimmingly well. This is a reality that many privileged people throughout society have completely lost touch. What makes a strong character is showing tenacity. Having the ability to keep on going even when things go badly. I would go on to say this is the biggest key to success. None of this has to do with either positive or negative thoughts. A critical and tough minded person is more likely to persevere in such cases over an individual who just wants to be positive.

9. This book will make you irresponsible: It's ironic a book that so harshly promotes "everything that happens to you; you attract, others be damned," could lead to a lack of personal responsibility. However, if you take the time to analyze the philosophy, we'll see that it appeals to the irresponsible and the immature.

For starters, societal responsibility is completely discouraged in the book. It's all about the cult of the individual. Nowhere does the book explain that through your actions, you mould the society that we live in. You're not responsible when you turn the other cheek in the face of injustice. You're not responsible for the broken down relationships when you had to jump ships at the least sign of what you see as repulsive negativity.

On a more personal front, you'll never accept any responsibilities involved with trying to reach your goals. Much like the people who dreamed of getting rich through the stock market by merely thinking it, you'll dismiss the fact that it wasn't due to your lack of responsibility that brought you to this peril, but due to your lack of positive thinking.

The entire philosophy appeals to the immature. It's a Peter Pan complex.

10. This book will make you blind to evil: As I stated in another article, there is no such thing as good and evil feelings. The danger you run into by simply giving way to all "happy emotions and thoughts," while dismissing all "darker emotions and thoughts," is that you'll be unable to recognize evil. Contrary to what people will have you believe, evil triumphs not when it defeats good. Evil doesn't require good. Evil triumphs when enough people are convinced it simply doesn't exist. In order to identify evil, you must heed way to some of the most uncomfortable emotions and or thoughts. The Secret instructs you to steer away from such thoughts, arguing that they will bring you misery. The danger here is that your sensor to detect wrong doing will vanquish.

Now, returning back to that market crash in 2008, wake up! The wealth didn't exactly disappear, the wealth was stolen. However, due to being blinded by the philosophies of The Secret, many people are just unable to see it. I would go on to say that the book succeeded in its true intentions and goals.

11. Finally, this book will make you evil:

He who knows evil; is good.

He who understands evil; is evil.

He who rejects evil; is a servant of evil.

-Donovan D. Westhaver

The Law of attraction has been around since the beginning of time its principles are taught in the Bible, the Torah, The Qoran, all major religions, you left out one major part of the secret action is a part of the process it is more than thinking positive and wishing upon a star, Oprah is not the poster child by the way because she did not write the Secret Rhonda Byrne is the one who wrote and directed the secret I practice the Law Of Attraction and I believe in god, I am a baptist if you look and read the bible you will find these lessons scattered throughout ASK RECEIVE BELIEVE HAVE FAITH REAPING WHAT YOU SOW....and so on do these things sound familiar? It is not the Secrets fault that the economy crashed and you can not blame all the evil of the world on the Law Of Attraction...You really do not even understand what the Law Of Attraction really is. Read your bible or whatever holy book you read and you will see this secret in there.

Bill Yon,

If you read the article, you would see that I acknowledged "The Secret" was written by Rhonda Byrne. It's in the first paragraph.

By the way, I'm agnostic, I was merely making a statement that The Secret is the first book to win out over either the Bible or the Qoran in sales for a given year. I don't consider this an attack upon my religion, for I worship neither. I'm not offended by The Secrets' sales volume, merely the message it carries.

I don't blame The Secret for the economy crashing, but I do blame our naivety (much of it encouraged by philosophies such as in The Secret and books of similar ilk) for us not taking action and doing anything about it.

Loved the article. I do not agree with everything you said but I agree with most of the stuff you had to say concerning the secret. One of the most obvious inaccuracies that the Secret talks about is like attracting like. That is simply not true. In the real world, opposites attract. But I digress. The main thing about the secret, there is absolutely no support for it as a philosophy. It contradicts itself and bill yon didn't even try to address the main criticisms. All he had to say as a support is basically if you look hard enough, you can find it in the bible. That's not an argument and that doesn't even come close to supporting any claims that the crazy law of attraction proponents make.

Hi Don, so glad someone like you finally told what this "Secret" is all about. The more I hear about it, the more I become wise and not take it seriously. It's nothing but trash. Well done!!!

O.K. cbl2988 I will address somethings about the secret. Visualizing it is merely picturing your goal or something you are trying to accomplish. Picture it keep it on the forefront of your mind. Think positive believe that you can accomplish what you are trying to accomplish, have FAITH. Have Faith in GOD,in my case, and have faith in yourself. BELEIVE, believe that you can do it and once you have achieved your vision or goal then you will RECEIVE. The Law of Attraction requires Action along with everything else, and yes it can be found in the bible as well as in all other major religions. So A man thinketh so shall he be, ASK, Believe, RECEIVE, have FAITH, you Reap what you sow, so a man thinketh in his heart so shall he be, need I go on? The bible support its philosophy, as well as QAUNTUM PHYSICTS, plus the law of attaction as delivered in the Secret is based on the book 'THINK AND GROW RICH." read the book. Napoleon Hill was commitioned to research the thought process of the richest and most successful people of his day and the law of attraction is the ONE thing that they all had in common. Read "Think And Grow Rich." it should be available online somewhere for a dollar.

I want to say one thing, and that is the book itself cannot 'make you' do anything, it can 'influence' you to do the things you claim Don, however to a degree I agree with quite a bit of what you suggest as possibilities. Let's hope that enough people DON'T read this book to have some form of intelligence against it.

Cherie,

While it's true a single book can't "make you" do anything; understand my choice of wording is that of a heart spilled writer trying to express himself and reach out to people.

Influence, scientifically speaking, is the proper terminology; but that choice of word doesn't elicit as much power in the message I want to convey. Often, when I point out people may have been influenced badly; they then argue that they're "grown ups" now and immune to such things. Influence is a word that is too easily dismissed.

Anyways, thanks for all the comments.

I also agree with most of what DonDWest said, I more better book to actually read and apply would be Psycho Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. This book was probably the inspiration for many of the newer self help books.

What's important is taking action.

The law of attraction is real..if you don't believe in something doesen't mean it's not real..like just because an atheist comes up with a very clever theory of why there is no God doesen't mean there is no God, thats simply his free opinion..if one doesen't use the LoA wisely and makes a mess of himselve doesen't mean the LoA is not real or that its bad..like we have people who have killed in the name of God,that doesen't mean that God is not real or that He is bad..the world had people with messed up lives before the 'secret'..The secret has changed my life for the best-wonderful things have happened in my life that have left me dazzled...and i certainly do not shun anyone because of their negativity, i simply infect them with my optimism..its all about how you take LoA, how you take God, how you take life generally...ofcourse if you are a lazy loser you will cling to anything to support your lazy nature including LoA, God, Religion,Economic depression......

I have both the DVD and the book. It has an excellent premise. It does not teach one to be unkind and unsympathetic but to be positive through thoughts and implementation. You have a contention with the premise of avoiding negative people. Yes, you must ignored and cut off contact with negative people if you want to succeed in life. I concur with this for you are known by the company you keep. As Larry Winget, a motivational speaker, states that a person is known by his/her friends. Mr. Winget states that unsuccessful people usually have unsuccessful friends and if he/she wants to be more successful, ditch the unsuccessful friends and get successful friends. The Secret is just plain commonsense!

The secret is a bunch of satanically inspired (same as think and grow rich masonry bullshit artist) drivel that babylon has been pushing for it's entire existance. Of coarse seeing as this is an evil world and most find themselves quite at home in it, therefore it's popularity. However wisdom is known of her children, and light ALWAYS overcomes darkness.

The secret as it is called is in the BIBLE. Is the BIBLE evil? Think And Grow Rich, The Secret, and all of these other books is only isolating an ancient lesson that is in the bible and other religious books.Do some research.

I was always bothered by the need for some to attribute more simplicity and ego to the concept of mystical attraction...than it warrants.

The Jews in Europe of the thirties did not "attract" what happened to them. Many would disagree.

We do not "attract" our own good luck either. And if we do we don't know it...we're only fooling ourselves and losing our true selves... if we think we know it.

This is all part of the mystical concept of synchronicity...which should always be a quiet private thing in people's lives. That strange "voice" blowing in from other realms is a hint of realities beyond our touching directly...And it all should be left alone.

There is no "law" of "attraction". Please don't pass along the lie that any of this stuff can ever be grasped or worked with. It is simply a gift which comes and goes regardless of our merits or efforts......maybe something like the old discredited and misunderstood and misapplied... calvinist concept of "grace".

Oh standforsomething you are so wrong. I am a baptist and I do not accept things without verifying whether or not it is in the Bible. My salvation depends on it. the law of attraction is there. It is also in the scientific community. research the subject real research. The biggest misconception is that the law of attraction is wishing and positive thoughts, but the truth is the law is action combined with focused thoughts and unbreakable belief. it is your choice whenther or not you believe or practice the law of attraction it is your choice.

Wow!! So negative this article. LOA is common sense. Jesus preached it. Its so much more than what The Secret talks about. But its all good, you can't convince anyone if they're not ready to change. God Bless

jen 4 years ago

After spending some years with the new age stuff, I have to say, you are right. Law of attraction is dangerous. Its the expression of western materialistic arrogance.

Jono 4 years ago

This article heavily proves that the author doesn't have much of an open mind about this subject. First of all, the Law of Attraction isn't just sitting on the couch and using your mind to get anything you want, it isn't just wishful thinking either. I haven't read the original book, but I have watched the extended DVD which apparently teaches the exact same stuff. I don't remember it telling people to look down on people less fortunate than them, and even if the Secret did suggest that, that isn't what the Law of Attraction is about!

As a lot more educated and open minded people would say, it's common sense and is working all the time. However, something that the Secret didn't go into much was the spiritual side of things. The book I'm reading now "the Power" and the Secret DVD both explained that all humans have the ability to Love, and Love is the most powerful force which you must have in order to have the Law of Attraction work on your side. Half of this article describes how the power could be used used by the hands of evil and degrade good people, yet the Law of Attraction can only work with Love, and all humans want to Love, it's their corrupt nature of this physical reality that has closed off their mind.

Have you ever thought that maybe global warfare is actually caused by the synchronizing hate of nations and nothing to do with collective energetic visualisation? No, of-course not because you're too busy trying to make something marketing from the Law of Attraction seem ill intentioned.

Have you also considered or at-least given a constructive brain-storm into why it doesn't dwell on it being used by a collective society? Because the Secret is something that focusses on the individual who buys it, almost like a self-help resource with a metaphysical twist. Every person on this planet has their own individual energy and soul which is transferred onto this reality, for example that's why everyone has their own kind of humour that can't be categorised by words, if you describe someone as "A funny guy" you're acknowledging, believe it or not, that their energy makes them humorous. Everybody is living their story through this current generation right now, and if you interfier with that, it's not because of the Law of Attraction because it's not intended with Love.

Catherine 4 years ago

I think there is SOME truth to the law of attraction but it shouldn't be referred to as a law as it isn't a law...it's more like an occasional occurance depending on conditions being favorable. I also want to say that my friends and I grew up in the same slums but they had brains and I didn't and they are rich and successful now and I am not but they are still my friends and hanging out with me didn't stop them from manifesting their dreams. I am grateful because often friends do ditch their poor friends when they make it big but my friends didn't and I am a very negitive person so...there. Ha

You are dead on right!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Karma is the real law of attraction. The "Secret" is B.S. with a capital B. And furthermore, the "Secret" defies the overall Plan of "Source," making it appear as if Source is Servant to our insane Ego! I'm so happy that someone is not wallowing in Ego! Stay well. Love you!

I understand your point of view...but the Law of Attraction is real...most people are just idiots and here that you can get whatever you want in your life and then shut their ears off. It's more about opening up to what you want and not being negative...you will then begin to realize things that have always been there right in your face, you just failed to see them because you were too caught up in negativity.

listen 4 years ago

mine english is not very good., but i am very spiritual and i believe that law of atraction really works but there are indeed some dangers! one example is when you get sick it is because you are doing something wrong in you're life such as not walking on you're right life path or just making the wrong decisions.. sicknes is there for you to see what you must change so when you change some things in life you're sicnes wil go away or you get sick because you want to pay you're carma of in that way..and it is not of wrong thinking..

listen 4 years ago

any way.. every thing what comes of the elite or illuminatie is not good voor us and there is always something behind it to lower our fibration so that we wil not wake up or get (enlighted) so that they can more easely Control us!(oprah winfrey and al the others who show us the secret) there is such thing as carma that we have to work out in our lifes and there are olso things as you're own mision that you have to fullfil(some thing that you choose for before you were born)... there are negatife and positief energies, some things you can onley lurn from negatief expiriences (energies) or negatief people (often people who are on a low friquentie. and if you decide to take those people out of you're life than you canot learn those thing that are supposed for you to learn. and yes like atracts like but its not always so becouse somethimes you hafe to learn something of some lower friquetntie(people).. earth is not a very high friquentie (not a very high dimension) so there are alot of negatief energies and people and some choose to come here and learn here of those energies becose there are not such low friquentie things in higeher dimensions, so those lessons can not be lurned there.. what i want to say is that it is not good to trow al the negatiefe people who come in you're life away out you're life.. sometimes we are here to expirience them.. and i can wright a book with everything what i know.. but the onley thing i just wanted to say is if you want something you dont need to visualise( i know it helps) but it is olso dangeres becouse you're lying toward you're self and getting far away of realitie and not to mention more dangerouse things could happen.. if you want to aciefe you're goals work hard towards it, have faith that you wil achiefe it and think positiefe to stay positiefe and you wil get on a higher friquentie where it wil be easely to achiefe you're positief goals. and as higher friquentie you get the more you wil desaire for love than for materialism..

In my humble opinion, you are just looking to pick a fight. Read the optimists creed or something, stop criticizing, and respect others choices in following the teachings of this book. Have a great day though, oh and during your day ask yourself if you're truly happy in all aspects of your life. Just some food for thought.

Good article!

The guru James Ray who was held responsible for the deaths of those people in the Arizona sweat lodge was reportedly completely broke while he was lecturing people on "the secret" to thinking yourself rich.

I recoil when I hear The Secret/Law of Attraction compared to witchcraft. It might be demonic! But, the secret, law of attraction is not any kind of ancient occult secret. It is a perversion of the early quantum physics theories of Annie Besant. At least, it looks to me like that's where it came from. The people who came up with this took a thread from something she said in her book on "Thought Forms," and ran with it to sell books, sell seminars and basically fleece people.

There are real esoteric scientific theories in witchcraft (just like there are similar theories in conventional science), but the secret/law of attraction is not one of them. It's a very wicked, victim-blaming philosophy - very convenient for sociopaths, narcissists, criminals and the like. People who buy into it turn into narcissistic sociopaths who have no capacity for compassion for other people. The James Ray incident is a big example of this, in my opinion.

Voted up and accolades!

Nan Ross 3 years ago

I have heard everyone's viewpoint and arguments about the Secret. I have listened and watched the Secret, read Think and Grow Rich and have read the Bible. They all say exactly the same lesson - HAVE FAITH. Our thoughts transformed into energy. Our energy determine our experiences.Whether you're trying to seek love, peace, harmony or wealth, we all need direction and guidance. We all seek for answers. Whether you seek those answers from the Bible and/or self-help literature, we would have to know who we are. But meditation is the key to knowing who you are and why you are here, your destiny. Let's focus more on our subconscious mind and become awakening. Once you are spiritual awakening, you will always find the TRUTH.

There you go. Make us do all the work of creating YOUR arguments. If we actually did this, you'd probably say you "manifested" the arguments like a good "Law" of attraction follower would. How about actually CITING the book instead of making us read it.

@Jono

I'm working on yours, but for now, lay off the ad hominems, will you?

Jvincer,

If you want to see how far gone these people are, see Will Smith (advocate of the The Secret/Law of Attraction) talking about how 2 +2 = 5 if he says so. YTVid here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcPN7Un6Frw

You can't argue with "faith" because it's insanity.

That's an incredible statement.

The Secret helped me immensely. I was always a positive person but once I changed my way of thinking I have achieved success in whatever I've put my mind to...The Secret or the law of attraction doesn't tell you to get rid of the negative people in your life, but to be do positive that you can no longer be affected by the negative people, and in fact, your powerful positive energy will overpower the negative energy. I believe in the law of attraction with all my might, if you apply it correctly you will have everything you've ever wanted, NOT just material 'stuff' but real relationships.

and yet most of the problems in this world comes directly from christians, jews, and muslims. Killing each other in the name of god and spreading hate murder and mayhem all over the globe. That day when the world will turn their backs on all religious bull crap is here.

the truth hurts darrius, are you blind to the war we are in now? The war in the middle east the jewish fighting over holy land? The jihad being waged all over the world by the muslims? Why am I an idiot when I see the reality for what it really is? Tell me why do you think we have been at war for twelve years? I am very good at name calling but I'm not into that. I really would like to hear your argument. Can you present a really good argument? I really hope that you can?.You see,I am a Baptist who is fighting hard to maintain my beliefs, but the things I see in every day life and the crazy actions the mass bloodshed that we christians, the jewish, and the muslims spread across the globe in the name of god/jesus/allah is really making me question my beliefs and I am not the only one. How can one claim to be men of god and behave in the way we behave? The Catholics and the wide spread molestation the protecting of pedophile priests? Darrius if you called me an idiot that must mean you are religious, and your first instinct is to call me an idiot. So quick to anger. But doesn't religion teach that we are all supposed to rise above these petty feelings of anger, jealousy, hate, lust? Aren't we supposed to put our best face forward at all times in order to show the lost the glory and power of god? Are we supposed to live in away where the lost will say " There is a man of God?" Are we not supposed to walk in Faith? Good faith? To live our life as best we can to show the lost the glory of God inside of us? Can you answer me? I welcome your answer because it is time that the world had this talk. I am not the only one that is losing faith, this is happening all over the world at a rapid pace. Do not get mad because I see things for what they are not for what I want them to be.

Wow! You are wrong on so many levels. Before you write another article about this, I think you need to do a lot more research on the subject, including reading about research on current theories in quantum mechanics.

There are a whole list of errors I could point about your thinking, but then I'd have to write an entire article about it, and I really don't care to. I would like to say though, that all the things you listed that can happen to a person (if they follow this philosophy), is all a matter of choice. No book, movie or article will make a person do what they don't really want to do. None of this is going to make anyone heartless, poor or generally unkind, unless that's the way they want to be.

I see the law of attraction information as a tool. For example, you can use a match to light your fireplace. You can also use a match to set fire to your house. It's your choice. So are the tools you use in the law of attraction. No one can force you to do what you don't want to do. You choose your actions. If they were positive, you get positive results. If not, then you get negative results.

I hope that eventually, you see that all you're doing here is spreading fear; and fear is something that causes people to make big mistakes. Again, I urge you to do more research on this topic before coming to any fact-based conclusions...

Peggasuse,

Maybe you need to listen to some lectures by actual quantum physicists or read some books about actual quantum physics. It really is a set of scientific theories - actual science. It has no application whatsoever to social relationships, attracting a mate, attracting a job, a new Corvette, etc. One is science and the other is baloney put in a nice box with a ribbon on it to sell to suckers. The positive thinking cult has been at this thing since the Depression Era - preying upon the weak-minded.

I have been studying, researching and writing about the occult for more than 20 years now and I can tell you that the Secret/Law of Attraction is an absolute lie with no basis in actual occult philosophy.

The Secret book (and movie) starts out with this bold lie, telling people that it is some ancient knowledge that has been re-discovered. This is fraud.

Telling the truth is not "spreading fear." Pointing out that the emperor is naked is not "spreading fear." Pointing out the arrogance and immorality of the people involved in this fraud is not "spreading fear." It's just telling it like it is.

Furthermore, people who buy into this big fraud turn into major jerks - blaming the poor for being poor, blaming crime victims for their own victimization, blaming the sick for their illnesses, blaming victims of storms, etc. - if only those people had proper thoughts, they wouldn't have had to learn this lesson.

I see no difference between this hypocrisy and that of some lunatic like Pat Robertson - it's all the same garbage, fundamentally.

People who doesn't believe in this power and who doesn't try to use this power doesn't see effects of it. But I see. So bad things are happening in my life beacause of this power. If I can't find a solution I will kill myself. Cause I cant live without freedom. Can you help me?

I've told myself I would stay away from Hubpages due to certain events that happened two years ago, but seeing that someone in my blog is contemplating suicide in regards to being brainwashed by voodoo such as "the Secret," I feel compelled to reply.

Death, I'm about to tell you a sensitive matter that I haven't yet revealed in this blog. During my late teens, I suffered a rare neurological disorder that led to sporadic moments of physical pain, depression, restlessness, ticks, unbearable cramps, etc. I knew in my heart I was a good person who suffered an illness that the doctors couldn't properly diagnose, however the rest of society (my parents included) believed that all my pain was a result of "not having the right attitude."

I was told that my problems were "all my fault, I'm just too negative." I was instructed to read numerous new age self-help books that preach such sophistry. I went through some very awkward "cognitive therapy" exercises with many psychologists that were often embarrassing and confusing. I was trained, and perhaps on occasion even threatened into believing this illness, in which I had no control, was all my fault.

My parents couldn't be bothered to genuinely hear out my problems. After all, I was too much of an inconvenience, I should learn to just shut up and be happy. It's all about attitude you see, it's all in my head, if I would just think positively, all my problems would go away. . .

So instead of receiving love and support through these difficult times; I received criticism, judgment, and at times ridicule. To make matters worse, I eventually started to believe what I was being taught. It was at this point in my life I seriously contemplated suicide.

However, something stopped me at the last second from driving that butcher knife straight into my chest. It was a "flash scene" of my father sitting at the dinner table discussing the events of my suicide with family. I was having a hypothetical image of the events that would likely transpire after my suicide. My father stated the following words, "you see, he was a troubled and negative individual. He refused to listen to us and suffered from depression. He killed himself because he just didn't think positively." Following that statement, there was no sadness to be found around that dinner table, only acknowledgement of what was seen as the inevitable.

It was at this point I realized "the Secret" for all that it truly is: A convenient pet theory/excuse for society, parents, religion, etc. to write off perfectly capable people whom they're too lazy to properly help. If I were to kill myself, I would run the risk of adding yet more credibility to the Secret were truthfully no credibility can be found. By killing myself - I would allow "the Secret" to win and make life all too convenient for my lazy excuse for a father. I wasn't comfortable with this idea, so I chose to live, with the sole purpose of being that annoying person who questions the conventional thinking patterns of our propagandized society.

For a while I lost myself in the world of science. I remember doing some strange chemical experiments during my young adulthood. I figured the best way to fight the sophistry of the Secret was to seek the truth. The world of science seemed like a good avenue to start. This worked for a while, until I needed to make money, and I found out that acquiring these scientific skills were not particularly valued in the "free market" without a college degree as a means of recognition.

I then shifted my autocratic studies towards studying human history, behaviour, propaganda, politics, economics, etc. This was far more useful in helping me understand why people believe in stuff like the Secret and also had the added benefit of helping me get/keep any job.

Death, I recommend you do the same. While you may have no reasons to live; you truly don't have any reasons to die. Just dedicate your life to figuring out why people are such assholes and fighting such assholes. After all, you can always just kill yourself later, what's the rush? What's the worse that can happen when just a few hours ago you were seriously considering suicide?

Yes, perhaps one day you'll get an angry mob at your door wanting to gut you like a fish for exposing their evil, so what? Surely getting killed this way is a lot more fun than committing suicide. Dedicate your life to being that asshole who points out REAL assholes. By all means, take joy out of opposing the very fabric of this sick society.

To the first poster commenting that the concepts in The Secret are already to be found in the Bible, the Bible differs is that it contains clear checks against individualism and materialistic self-interest which The Secret does not (The Secret in fact, encourages these, since it makes no reference to ethics) in the ten commandments as well as Jesus' teachings.

excellent article. you have alot of strong points. i think in some areas you're a tad opinionated, but i can understand why. bravo. wonderful work.

nomansland 2 years ago

I totally agree with you. I lost 2 years of my life with the Secret. When I first read it, I thought it was a miracle, that it explained everything that happened to me.

I never was a very positive person, but that doesn't mean I didn't accomplish anything. On the contrary, I've done brilliant studies, art, I was good at many things. I had many friends, and was just the kind of person to be extra happy and extra sad the next day. That's just my personnality.

My melancholy helped me in a lot of areas, especially in art (music and writing).

But when I heard of the Secret, I was in a very dark moment of my life and it seemed like the explanation to my situation at that time. I was in a job I didn't like and decided to quit cause "I visualised a better one", I "knew I could have everything I wanted".

I don't want to say it was a bad thing. I think it's something I had to do. It's been two years now and I'm still jobless. I blamed myself so much for being negative, rejecting friends, thinking everyone was an idiot and I ONLY had the "secret" to succeed.

Even if my situation wasn't improving, that I was very lonely cause incapable of showing empathy to my friends, I was jealous of them succeeding while I DIDN't ! Why am I still jobless when they're clearly more negative than me and they find a job ?

Well... That's because they were applying like crazies, they were adding action in their lives. I was just contemplating. Trying to figure out the best job possible. Trying to be positive while rejecting everyone around me.

Gosh... When I woke up from this nightmare, I thought I was completely stupid, that I lost 2 years of my life ! But I regain my power. I stopped blaming myself for my bad feelings, my bad thoughts. Strangely, I'm far more gentle with my friends, I see them more often, even if I have to struggle with my old pattern. I am happy to be me again. To feel lost. To feel angry. I feel human, I feel alive !

And I started doing things about my life. I'm so glad I finally woke up.

Please, don't believe blindly what people tell you. You don't deserve your life. You're far more than this. There would be no greek tragedies, philosophers or beauty in this world without sadness and joy, walking hand in hand.

Charlie Shivargo 2 years ago

To be honest I didn't read one thing you wrote that I didn't agree with. I've tried helping my friends (I'm embarrassed some of them buy this garbage) see that this stuff is not only absurd, but encourages arrogance, selfishness, a ton of cognitive dissonance, and a trigger happiness to reject anyone who dares to fall short of their idea of absolute "positive thinking" (which they seem to just use as a catch-all term for anything they don't personally agree with or jives with their ego).

I've been writing professionally for awhile now and I couldn't have stated that more eloquently than you, and I thought I had a good handle on the ways this whole thing is dangerous and vomit inducing. The day I finally snap with my friends' bs I'll prob force them to read your article. Only half joking.

And to the people using the ole' quantum psychics defense, there have been recent tests that prove that observance alone can indeed influence matter, but it is on a very, very, small scale. It would be akin to the control a fish has over the water passing through its gills (not even prob), not the power to move currents and change tides like many of you would love to think. Follow this "law" and at best you will be living in a world of miserable cognitive dissonance and paranoia, at worst, you'll be blind and alone.

99% sure that Law of Attraction does not work. I have spent a great deal of energy, time and financial resources towards making this approach work and felt "good" about it throughout this process. And after more than half a decade of using Law of Attraction approach, I can safely conclude it is not effective at creating desired life change. Sometimes, I saw some low to mediocre results from application of law of attraction principles, and that kept me hopeful that things would get better. Ultimately, however using this approach for me has resulted in a mountain of debt and a low credit score. Later on, I discerned that this level of ungrounded spirituality is rooted in Luceferic energies that make you feel good in a short-term, but ultimately trap you in unfavorable circumstances. In the words of Rodney Atkins "When we're lost at sea, the devil's got you thinking, that the boat ain't sinking but your boots are getting wet." That's exactly what this approach is all about - denying the truth and pretending that things are getting better, when actually they're getting worth. Essentially, Law of Attraction approach in general is based on cult teachings of the past, but they have been re-presented in a positive light through books like "The Secret," and Esther Hicks books, like this one. This Law of Attraction approach to life suggests that we stay selfish and focus on ourselves, doesn't matter who we hurt in the process so long as we feel good. It encourages people to be self-centered to the point of forsaking their responsibilities and duties. The reason why LOA books sound convincing is because they are filled with spiritual half-truths, lies mixed with misinterpreted truths. Unfortunately, Earthly life is filled with challenges and responsibilities that often don't feel good, but are necessary for personal and collective progress and growth. Law of Attraction teachings encourage us to close our eyes on the truth of situation, which allows a lot of malevolent, inappropriate and harmful energies slip under the radar to bring ever-greater amounts of damage into out lives.

Reading some of these testimonies on here make me literally wrench with pain and sadness. People wanting to kill themselves, people with immense disappointment because of this, arrogant "believers" blaming victims. When I first even heard about this nonsense I knew it was terribly evil and malicious thing. Here's the what I have experienced and believe if it helps anyone: Humans are indeed spiritual beings. We have souls and our thoughts do affect other people, but not in the ways that this new "religion" claims. I'll be honest, I am Christian who is very ashamed of what people who claim my faith have done in this world. If you put aside the old testament and focus on Jesus' teachings, he never told anyone to kill, exterminate, rape, plunder or even try to shove his teachings down other people's throats. He said, "IF Ye Love me KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS." What are His commandments? Treat others the way you would like to be treated; have compassion on the sick and poor, Give to those in dire need, Love one another, Love your neighbor, RESIST Evil. Jesus NEVER said this was going to be easy and all happy go lucky. If its any comfort to anyone who has been victimized by this terrible religion, remember this promise: Psalm 22:24 "For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard." Personally, considering that "The Secret" the Bible, which has never been done in history, makes me wonder if my original gut feeling was right that this is the religion of the Antichrist. I can think about a lot of what Jesus taught and this "Law" contradicts almost all of it! Be selfish, the poor and sick attracted their circumstances, you'll have all the material gain that you want....PUKE!! I now know why I am currently renting from this couple and living of my music to pay rent. God has sent me hear to break them out of the delusion. When I look into their eyes its like they are glazed over and they are not even themselves. The wife of the landlord is studying to be an "energy healer." The landlord is full-blooded Native American, as I am also part. He keeps trying to explain the "Law of Attraction" to me and attributes his wealth to this, though I see that it has come from working himself very hard and constantly as an airline pilot and fellow musician. I'm actually afraid for this couple and have to be very careful about what I say to them. They are in it DEEP! My plan is to live the most REAL Christian life of helping them and self-sacrifice as I possibly can and maybe God will wake them back up to being human again. Everything seems so fake and idealistic. They are like the perfect classy glamorous materialistic people, but I sense such dire emptiness around them. Its like their thoughts are consumed by money, objects and their sex life. I don't feel any REAL genuine LOVE or humanity coming from them. I know that the landlord KNOWS BETTER. I know he is fooling himself. He likes me very very much and wants me to start a professional band with him. He genuinely is a very good person and I think he likes me because he sees how much I am concerned about what is happening with this and just how hard I am fighting to remain human. He sees how much I struggle, how hard I work and how much I love Christ despite the fact that I know he is pretty aware that I suffer from severe but well-treated mental illness. I am going to set the example for them because they have kept the commandments by letting me rent for cheap, and have been very kind to me. I know that they need my presence because they want their humanity back. It has taken me 31 years and the loss of everyone that love to finally realize that pain usually means you are actually doing something right. And though they have the world and are wealthy, they cannot hide the pain in their eyes from me. I feel like they are burning in the middle of the fire and I am standing on the outside pulling them out. I hope what I have wrote has brought at least someone some comfort. I know you people can see this for what it is and that you are all caring and loving people. I am so glad that there are a few of us remaining that are still human. By the way, I DO NOT believe in eternal Hell. If I can be any kind of inspiration to any of you as a Christian, I want you to know that I am a universalist. I already know that you know the Bible is full of contradictions and really bad stuff in the Old Testament, but the words of Christ were literally impossible to corrupt, and those are all you really need to understand. Faith is great, but any of you claiming to be REAL Christians and promoting this doctrine, remember that faith without works is dead. Some of this hardest working people I have ever known don't have typical 9-5 jobs and they never stop working in the pursuit of loving, caring for and helping others, no matter how much negative energy they dump on you, which is exactly what this is about; they are not being positive, they are disposing of their sins onto us that are still human.

Thanks I enjoyed your article - as others Im not sure that the book will make you evil, but I do agree that it is utterly materialistic - all the achievement is for superficial stuff. Living in a country where many people are very poor, the book seems even more superficial. Why not use the powers of attraction for spiritual rather than material achievement? Im also agnostic, and dont see this in a religious context, but rather a moral one
