The Power of the Human Mind

Updated on January 29, 2010

Think you can, think you can't ...either way you're right

The power of the human mind is nothing short of amazing. Mind blowing, if you'll pardon the pun! We all go about our day-to-day lives, reacting to hundreds of little things every day, blaming other people for 'ruining' our day or thanking them for cheering you up. We might feel happy, relaxed, angry, upset, sad, shocked, tickled by something and embarrassed all in one day. Our emotions as humans are all over the shop. But why? Is it those particular situations that make us feel that way? Or is it us that make ourselves think we should feel that way towards that particular situation?

I would estimate that about 95% of people on this planet do not realise the brain power they have as humans. If you take a moment to actually sit back and look at the human form, you'll see just how big our brains actually are in comparison to the size of our face and body. They're huge. And intelligence has nothing to do with it. Your IQ can be 5 or 105 - your ability to control your thoughts and emotions is just the same when you put your mind to it. There's a famous saying: "Think you can, think you can't, either way you're right," and that saying couldn't be more true.

Humans, roll up! Roll up! Step aboard the Emotion-Brain-Coaster...The Emobracoaster is sure to give you one hell of a ride!

Think about it. When that person comes up to you, shoves you, calls you names and accuses you of doing something you haven't done and you feel that wave of utter rage rush into your body, who as created that rage? Is it the person who's just picked a fight with you? Or is it you? Did that person come and inject anger-itus into your body? No. You did. Your mind did. Nobody can control you but you. Including your body. Your body does not control your mind; your mind controls your body. So when something like that happens, use your mind power, breathe, and remember the only person capable of angering you is yourself.

This goes for fear, nerves and any other negative emotions; you can have all the people in the world sitting round you to comfort you, but they will never have any effect if your brain doesn't believe them first. The only person's opinion that will actually have an effect on your body is yours, because your brain is what relaxes you; your brain is what controls your nervous system. And who controls your brain? Correct - you!

How powerful is your brain? See for yourselves...

Do a little test. Let's call it the "Brain-Pain" test. Hold your right thumb out in front of you and look at it. Concentrate. Say the words, "My thumb hurts. Ouch. My thumb really hurts. Ah! My thumb stings! Yowch! My thumb hurts...etc" over and over again to yourself. See how it does actually start to hurt. It may even be going a little red. This is the power of your brain. This is also proof of how your imagination can really run free. How many times have you heard someone say something along the lines of, "I could have sworn I saw something over there! I must be just seeing things..." This is the problem with having such a powerful brain - although you can use it to help you in many aspects of your life, it can also become out of control in a negative way if you let it. But even if that happens, I promise you you can regain control. Use your head to defeat your head.

There are so many sections of the brain that are of utmost importance for normal function in a human. Imagination isn't so much a section of the brain as much as a part of the brain. Einstein himself once said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge," and how right he was. You can do anything when you put your mind to it. If you meditate you'll understand the mind's power. Meditation should feel as real as when you're dreaming.

A Dream is a Wish your...Imagination Makes!

When you dream, how real does it feel? You can feel everything as though it were really happening, can't you? You can smell everything. You can taste everything. You can see everything in immense detail. But is any of it real? Nope. Your brain, your amazing brain, has created every blade of grass, every sound, every emotion that you feel in your dreams. You sometimes wake up laughing...or crying...that's the effect the imagination can have on your body. Your mind is far more powerful than...well, than you'll ever imagine I suppose!

Depression

People often question the brain's ability to control its thoughts when depressed. It is true that depression is due to a lack of a certain chemical in the brain. But even when you're depressed, you can control your thoughts. You just lose the power to think you can. The brain is such a powerful organ, humans only use 10% of their ability - the brain has apporximately 100 billion neurons! So based on the fact that your brain is emmensly powerful, if you think, "I'm depressed," "I can't think," "I hate my life," then you WILL be depressed, WON'T be able to think and WILL hate your life.

The hardest part of it is being able to say the words "I am in control". But if you can do that - TELL your brain who's in control - your brain will believe you, just like it believed you when you said "I hate my life" etc, and you can once again regain the knowledge that you are actually in control of your thoughts. No one else. YOU. It is difficult, I know. Your brain is amazing if it's on your side. But if it 'turns against' you, it can be hell. But you are always capable to rise above it. Always.

Now, I'm not saying that when you better understand the power of your brain all your problems will be solved. But when it is brought to your attention that, actually, I don't need to feel angry right now, then you can learn, as I have done from studying this topic, to deal with every-day situations much better. You can reduce your own stress levels. Why, people have even claimed that they have helped cure themselves of an illness merely through positive thinking. Now that's the power of the human mind!

~ [From the Bible] The Lord asked a Great warrior, "Dare you take on the greatest and most dangerous foe that you could ever face?"
"Yes," replied the warrior.
"So be it," said the Lord. "You shall face yourself." ~
