Tool Steel What Is Available

Lets Talk About Metal;

Since I've been selling steel here in the USA since 1979, I've decided to write briefly about what grades of steel that are commercially available for you- the general public to purchase. Please let me know if you have any questions as I enjoy talking about steel / metal / raw material.

O-1 Tool Steel is a 1 percent carbon, oil hardening tool steel with the ability to be heat treated to Rockwell C 60 or higher. This grade is available in round bar, flat plate and rectangular and square bar. Hollow bar is also available. O-1 is also made as Drill Rod and Flat Ground Stock.

A-2 Tool Steel is a high carbon tool steel with the ability to be heat treated to Rockwell C 60 or higher. In general this grade is the lowest cost-air hardening tool steel on the market. This grade is available in round bar, flat plate and rectangular and square bar as well as Drill Rod and Flat Ground Stock. Hollow bar is also available.

D-2 Tool Steel is a high carbon tool steel with the ability to be heat treated to Rockwell C 60 or higher. At times for certain applications, D-2 is considered an "upgrade" over O-1 or A-2. This grade is available in round bar, flat plate and rectangular and square bar as well as Drill Rod and Flat Ground Stock. Hollow Bar is also available

A-6 Tool Steel is a 1 percent carbon, air hardening tool steel with the ability to be heat treated to approx Rockwell C 60. This grade provides greater stability / less movement in heat treatment than other grades of air hardening tool steel. Being available in round bar, flat plate and rectangular and square bar as well Drill Rod and Flat Ground Stock and Hollow Bar.

S-7 Tool Steel is a high carbon tool steel with the ability to be heat treated to Rockwell C 60 or higher. The "S’ prefix stands for Shock, as S-7 is considered a shock resistant grade. In general this means that S-7 will withstand certain applications with shock better than other grades. This grade is available in round bar, flat plate and rectangular and square bar as well as Drill Rod and Flat Ground Stock. Hollow Bar is also available

L-6 Tool Steel is a high carbon tool steel with the ability to be heat treated to approx Rockwell C 60 or higher. With the added element of Nickel in it, the grade has the ability to produce parts with greater "toughness" than other grades. This grade is available in round bar, flat plate and rectangular and square bar. Hollow Bar is also available.

For many Tool Steels remain a mystery, however if you have any questions or comments-let me know.
