Top Ten Universities of India According to the Survey of India Today

To study in the university campus is the dream of every student but very few are lucky ones who go through the gate of a well reputed university due to cut throat competition. At present, there are more than 300 universities in India offering various professional and non-professional courses.

Recently, India Today group has completed a survey to make a list of top 50 universities of India. The ranking of the universities was made on the basis of six factors namely, reputation, academic quality, research/projects, placements, faculty quality and infrastructure. On the basis of this survey I am giving the list of top ten universities of India.

10. Osmania University, Hyderabad

At number ten of this list is osmania university of Hyderabad established in 1918. Osmania University boasts of being the seventh oldest university of the nation. The campus of 1600 acres is one of the largest campuses in India. Osmania University also has approximately 3 lakh students pursuing their education which is perhaps highest in any university in the country.

Osmania University is known as one of the centre of excellence for research and development across the country with A grade certification from NAAC. It also offers fair number of placements to the students along with the splendid infrastructure and facilities.

9. Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University came into existence on 24th of December of 1955. This university is ranked at number nine by the India Today group. Jadavpur University functions with the following three aims:

· To promote the traditionally separated subjects by connecting them with modern teaching methodologies.

· To explore new academic administration without any political interference.

· To become a role model.

At present, Jadavpur University boasts of internationally recognized university with an reputation of providing quality education to its students. According to NISTADS reports Jadavpur University is ranked 2nd in publications of research papers in the whole country.

8. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

Indian Institute of Science was a dream of J.N. Tata who did his every bit to establish a research university in India. IISc was established in 1909 in a 400 acre campus. Today IISc is known as centre of excellence in the field of research in various fields. Well known Indian scientist Prof. CV Raman was the first Indian Director of the institute.

One more feat of this University is that almost every distinguished and well known scientist of India is associated with IISc either as student or faculty member. Scientists who offered their services to IISc include A. Ramachandran, C.N.R. Rao, R. Narasimha, G.N. Ramachandran, Harish Chandra and S. Ramaseshan. In 2009 IISc completed its 100 years of establishment which is another feather in its achievement.

At number seven is the well renowned university of Hyderabad. University of Hyderabad was established in 1974 and within this short span of time it has reached great heights. At present University has 46 different departments offering around 150 different courses. University at present has employed around 400 faculty members along with the enrolment of around 5000 students. The teacher student is 1:12 which is quiet impressive.

The whole campus of University is connected on 1Gbps NKN connectivity through wi-fi which provides connectivity to the students everywhere inside the campus. The most peculiar feature of the university is that every student who is enrolled in a regular program in the university will receive a stipend to assist his study. The Indira Gandhi library is filled with 3.5 lakhs books and other reference material. The library is fully computerized and has special software for visually challenged students.

University of Mumbai is one of the three oldest universities of India established in 1857. With a history of more than 150 years university is excelling in every field. Previously known as University of Bombay, Mumbai University enjoys the five star status given by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). University at present has two campuses; one of 250 acres while second is of 13 acres.

At present Mumbai University 354 affiliated colleges along with 36 departments offering various professional and non-professional courses. In the last five years, teachers of university had won 18 national/international awards at various levels. Every year university sends its 20 teachers to visit abroad for better exposure.

Madras University is ranked at number five by the India Today group which is constituted on 5th of September 1857 by an act of legislative council of India. The whole structure and constitution of the Madras University resembles the London University. The organization structure of University of Madras is made in the following manner:

· The Syndicate

· The academic council

· The Faculties

· The Finance Committee

· The Board of Studies

Madras University is considered the mother of all the old universities of southern India as its one of the oldest universities of country. With five star and A grade from NAAC, Madras University is achieving new heights of excellence every year. UGC has also recognized Madras University as centre of potential for excellence in the nation.

At number four is the University of Calcutta of west Bengal. Along with the Madras and Mumbai University, it was also constituted in 1857. With similar constitution it also adopted the pattern of London University initially and thereafter made certain amendments. Calcutta University also enjoys the A grade from the NAAC.

The other peculiar thing about the University that it has given three Noble Laureates to the country (Rabindranath Tagore, CV Raman and Amartya Sen). It was Calcutta University who established the first medical school in Asia, the Calcutta medical college set up in 1835 later affiliated to Calcutta University. Also , the credit of first women college in India is also goes to the Calcutta University.

3. University of Delhi

Delhi University situated at the heart of the nation is ranked at number three by the India Today groups. The University of Delhi came into existence in 1922 with three colleges and 750 students under the kitty. At present university has almost more than 1.5 lakh regular and 2.5 lakh distance learning students. Delhi University is made up of 16 faculties with 86 departments and 77 colleges.

Delhi University is one of the largest universities of the nation with campus spreaded all over the Delhi. The one more attractive feature of the University is that it has eight different libraries holding the record number of books. To study in the Delhi University is the dream of every student in the country but very few are successful who cross the campus gate.

2. Jawahar Lal Nehru University

Jawaharlal Nehru University or better known as JNU is the number two University of the Nation according to the India Today group. The whole campus of JNU is spread over 1000 acres of land with lush greenery all around. JNU has maintained the teacher student ratio of 1:10 which is best in the nation. With just 42 years old history, JNU has travelled a very long way of success in a very small span of time.

Centers of JNUwhich are recognized as centre of excellence by UGC are:

· Centre for Historical Studies.

· Centre for Political Studies.

· Centre for the Study of Social Systems.

· Centre for Economic Studies and Planning.

· Centre for the Study of Regional Development.

· School of Physical Sciences.

· School of Environmental Sciences.

· School of Life Sciences.

1. Banaras Hindu University

The number one University of India is Banaras Hindu University of Varanasi better known as BHU. At present BHU has two campuses with 3 institutes, 16 faculties, one forty departments, four advanced centers and four interdisciplinary schools. University has established its recognition not in the nation but also on the international arena.

At present there are more than 20000 students studying in the BHU campus out of which 2500 are research scholars and 650 foreign nationals from 34 different countries. BHU also offers excellent hostel facilities to outstation students with the total capacity of accommodating 9126 students at a single time.
