UAE's Burj Khalifa Launched as the New Tallest Building in the World

Updated on October 9, 2010

Burj Khalifa overtakes Taipei 101 as the newest tallest building in the planet.

Skyscrapers that stood like giants besides adjacent or nearby buildings are considered to be the symbol of the vast wealth and an indication of robust economy of a nation. The battle for the most tallest building was been a fad and neccesity if not obsession for some countries for what is stake is direct entry to  instant global prominence that will spur further more development and economic activities.

United States' Willis Tower ranks fourth tallest building in the world.

The United States of America which is regarded as one of the wealthiest nation on earth, bankrolled on its solid governance and stable financing system built perhaps one of the most fascinating and tallest skycraper, that is, the Sears Tower now known as The Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois that stood the mightiest and tallest from 1974 to 1998. Willis Tower is indeed a mammoth building during its reigned as the tallest for 22 years, standing so tall at a breathtaking 442 meters from the ground. This US pride, has 110 stories, weights about 225,000 pounds, covers a surface area of 502,320 square yards, and has 75 thick steel tubes which served as its pillar and cornerstone.

Malaysia's Petronas Twin Tower or Twin Towers (both stands at a height of 452 meters) overtook the Willis Tower in 1998 by submerging the Willis Tower by mere 10 meters. The Twin Towers stood high and went on to be the tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004. Malaysia gained instant fame and rave from all over the world with this undertaking, and installed itself as a Tiger Economy not only in the South East Asian region but in the entire Asia as well. Malaysia which is knowned for its exports such as the electronic equipments, petroleum, liquefied natural gas, wood, rubber, and textiles, is also a potent force in tourism industry. Though the Twin Towers relinquished its status as the tallest building it still holds the record for the tallest twin tower in the world, a record that is still intact now. The twin building now became a Malaysian emblem for her healthy and rapid development as well as a source of pride for her people.

In 2004 a groundbreaking breakthough was made by Taiwan as its massive and gargantuan skycraper Taipei 101 stole the thunder from Malaysia which holds the record for the tallest building and erected itself as the newest wonder in the world that time. Taipei 101 which its name indicates has 101 stories and stands at 508 meters nabbed not only the world record for the tallest building but as well as the much coveted Emporis Skyscraper Award on that the same year. Newsweek Magazine made this majestic building as part of its list of Seven Wonders of the World, whilst Discovery, was not to be outsone as it proclaimed this wonderful structure as one of its Seven Wonders of Engineering.

On the fourth day of January 2010, another kingpin in skycraper from Asia emerged again. This time the United Arab Emirates from the Middle East. Formal launching of what is dubbed to be the tallest building and structure ever at an enormous height of 818 meters, Burj Khalifa shattered the previous record of Taipei 101. This building is indeed larger than life, as it also holds record for the most stories (124 floors), highest floor occupied, and also became the world's tallest structure nosing out North Dakota's television mast. Three world records will certainly makes the people from this Arab State very proud and happy amid the economic tailspin the country is experiencing. This immense building houses the high-end Giorgio Armani Hotel, and luxury apartments and offices.
