A thank you note and intro to my Uncle's Philosophy

"Hi uncle Archie, thanks for all the inspiring moments, the long heated debates about the galaxy, and for teaching me your philosophy and all of your scientific approaches to visualizing what life is." by Mike Pugh aka Cloud Explorer

Without you I don't think I would have became so interested in such topics or so motivated as a youth to seek and quest for such knowledge as the Pythagorean Theorem (Mathematics), quantum physics & the Higgs Boson (CERN), the point of rest theory (The Universe), the three major types of rock (Earth Science), and the Eastern as well as European Oysters (Oceanography).

If it weren't for him I would of never been introduced to the greatest scientific and mathematical minds of Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, or the likes of Sigmund Freud. I don't think my mind would have been able to handle much of the brain work it takes to absorb such knowledge in college, or in high school, and many of the other subject young students tend to struggle with today, some even having issue's learning about all of these cool dudes I mentioned up above as well.

His philosophy deals with being a balanced human being, a caring and loving individual who knows how to spread the love for others. He also believes in sharing for the most part, he shares everything with his family, and friends without regard to receiving anything back in return.

He feels that life is all about the learning process, and he doesn't only say it to us all (His nieces and nephews), or expect it from us all to master on our own, he helped us all to learn some pretty important values dealing with learning by questioning us, forming incentives and the likes.

Another good thing about Uncle Archie, is not only does he care for, and teach his own children, but everyone else who comes in contact with him, he also tries to help with learning as a practicing tutor when they need the help, and by giving his sound advise about life from time to time to anyone who so desired to ask him for such moral support and assistance.

Stupid Smart in the Funniest of ways

My uncle was wicked smart as a young child I was told, and all throughout his adulthood till this day, and he's 60 years old now, oh he's also my dad's fraternal twin (May the lord bless his soul).

As a child my mother always had told me stories about him, and many other family members, she said he was quite the book worm when he was a young dude, and he always had a book by his side. The funny thing is he never leaves home without one (Like the American Express Card) till this day, its mind boggling to me at times, but that is his technique, and approach to many things as a retired person.

When I was a child myself, he used to always question his young nieces and nephews those truly puzzling, grueling questions, that would have your mind all boggled up for years.

I had thought that the very first time he had asked us all, that he was joking, but he was dead serious. His questions were crafted up like he was playing a rough game of double jeopardy with us. He had asked us questions like what are the 52 states, and each capital, what's the two types of Oysters, and where do they originate from, what's the Pythagorean Theorem, and so many more.

Q & A = Intense Research

The day was cold, it was the winter of 1980 I believe I had just turned about 5 years old. This particular day I will never ever forget, because it was the first time I came to realize that doing research can truly pay off.

So this is also when all the scary questions began, you know those hard to answer type puzzling questions intelligent folks seem to ask all the time. Well, them kinds of scientific and philosophical type questions; they had entered my realm of existence through my Uncle's inquisitive mind for the very first time on that day, and like a year later after that, I began to get use to his inspiring voice just etching new concepts into my youthful brain.

The very next year of 1981, our uncle had added an incentive bonus for one of us lucky soul's, who happened to be the very first person to answer such a question. This time however, after such a cool crash course introduction to his line of questioning. There was a huge reward of $50.00, for whomever could come up with the answers.

Honorably Dischared from active duty US Military Navy in 2008

I got out the US Navy, back in October of 2008, what an awesome experience that was. I served on active duty military for 10 long years, and received and honorable discharge with loads of honors, and professional achievements, and I thank my Uncle.
I got out the US Navy, back in October of 2008, what an awesome experience that was. I served on active duty military for 10 long years, and received and honorable discharge with loads of honors, and professional achievements, and I thank my Uncle.

Intense Research Truly Pays!

Now, for a poor 6 year old back then in the 80's, that much money was a massive win fall, and who do you think was empowered enough, and determined to win, little ole me. So, even though I was six then, and was one of the youngest out of about 5 of us, and including one of my aunts, who was 1 year older then my brother. My brother was about 11 years old at the time, you know, I can remember that time just as clear as day, and boy do I miss them good ole wonder years.

My mind for some reason keyed into my uncles thought process somehow. The funny thing is, back then I had some really huge eyes, and a massive head which must have made it much easier to absorb information for me. You know, I actually won that 50 buckaroo's, and not once, each and every time my uncle challenged us young hatch-lings, I seemed to be the only one motivated enough to try and win that darn thing "Winning to me, is the smell of sweet success through any Victory! after long and hard earnest productive efforts waged", unlike that of the true saying.

His Philosophy Sinks in Deeply

His philosophy on life soon began to emerge on me soon after, he noticed I had showed him my very own youthful potential, to keep cranking out all the answers to his intense line of questioning. The end result was, year after year his questioning began to sink into my thick skull, and when I was in grade school, as well as in high school, everything began to make much clearer sense. Another great question he had asked us, was what was the 3 types or rock. For that one, I had to dig deep into my moms Encyclopedia Britannica, and she had three huge ones as part of her personal library.

True appreciation

I'm so glad to have had the privilege to have been exposed to some pretty intense terminology, and knowledge at such a young age by that of my Uncle, he helped to stimulate parts of my brain I didn't even know that I had, and so it lead me to working hard as a dedicated student, and eventually I was lead to becoming an Engineering Student at Manhattan College, and also a successful career person of 10 years active duty military service to our country, as a U.S Navy Calibrations Supervisor, and Aviation Electronics Technician.

This is the power of what Learning can do for anyone today, and if it weren't for him motivating us young folks all throughout our lives, none of it may have happened, and I could have lived a less fortunate fate. I commend him on being the best Uncle he could possibly be, for setting a positive roles model for us using his philosophy on things in life, as well as for being a wonderful supportive father to his three children.

The key to his life it seems to be is achieving excellence on all academic levels, as well as professional levels, and that of personal, social, and family life as a whole. This is one premise that I have gained knowledge of, and by seeing how he has lead his family to much greater pastures, and I shall do the same for my own some day, "Thanks again Uncle Arch".

What a great tribute to your mentor Uncle Archie! The picture of him doing his golf swing on the front yard is just like my George did (with practice balls) all the time when he was unable to get to the golf course. He also practiced his fly fishing casts out there!

How wonderful that your Uncle led you to find your talents and accomplish your goals in education and career!

PS - I'm wondering -- have you any idea, other than his natural love of books, where he got HIS inspiration to persue knowledge? I wonder if he had an Uncle-mentor figure in his youth?

CloudExplorer profile image

CloudExplorer 4 years ago from New York City Author

@Nellieanna, thank you for the kind words, and that awesome insightful comment you just left me up there, as well as the second one, I will address them both here in this comment.

Him and his son loves playing lawn golf all the time, I think he secretly is training him to become like tiger woods, but without the true to life golf course, Hehe!

Oh and the second comments response is - I believe it was his parents that provided the learning platform for him, because they never frowned upon him staying to himself as a young child, and reading so many books, and I believe his knowledge of many subjects seemed to gain as he grew older and older.

I'm pretty sure his parents promoted his learning even further by helping push for him forward into attending college, and to pursue his career dreams, but I do believe his choices in learning specific subjects was that of his own doing, and I do wonder myself, I shall ask him as soon as he gets home, and I'll render such a message back to you, as soon as he answers.

Thank you once again for such an inquiry as to what was his childhood motivations as well, we will see what my Favorite Uncle has to say for sure.

Cheers to awesome communications here on hubpages, and its been a pleasure to meet you here today. This is why I love writing for hubpages, and sharing in this awesome community, because of being able to meet good people like yourself.

Mike, not sure if you'll see my comments but I wanted to let you know that we both share similiar experience with your Uncle Archie. He has always been a remarkable man and I owe alot of my success to him. You favor your father and I'm happy to see that you were a former sailor (you look like your second cousin Jaffa in that picture.) Ask your uncle about us and he'll fill you in. Tell him "the boggie man" said hello.

Hey Carlos, my Uncle mentioned your name many times and so I do know of you, I cannot picture your face though, but its all good bro. Thanks for extending your support here by giving my article about Uncle Arch a good read. That was quite thoughtful of you to do.

I'm wondering how in the world did you ever locate this particular article and where from did you find it, wow! This is just an amazement to me if anything, because I have no clue how people find any of my stuff online besides from my own sharing of it socially online, and in various locations. :)

I will surely let my uncle know today that you contacted me here, he will be so blown away by such a kind gesture you've rendered to us both. Thanks a million.
