What Makes a City Great
Around the world most prosperous cities appear to be located at the mouth of large rivers or in a harbour.which sits in the shipping lanes. London and New York come to mind. It seems that humanity needs the presence of water in order to settle into a restricted geographical area and begin trading.
I mean, what really makes a city great? Well that depends on how you measure greatness. If you are looking fro great weather you will not go to Seattle, Washington yet that is a most prosperous city. And if you are seeking ready water supply you would avoid Newport in the outskirts of Mandeville, Jamaica, yet the area is considered amongst the top ten healthiest places to live in the world.
What makes a city great? is it a solid historical and archaeological heritage? Havana would come out tops.
Would it be a long history going all the way back to the pharaohs, then Cairo, Egypt would take pride of place. From Giza to Sakkara you cant beat the city on the Nile for history.
Leadership must no doubt be a major factor. Great, wise and compassionate leaders who fear man and dispense justice ought to make a city great. I can think of King Solomon who ruled from glorious Jerusalem and built the temple.
Security must be a major concern, public safety, freedom of movement. Tell me your ideas. What makes a city great?
