Winter Photo Beauty-An Honest Look!!

Photo Bucket Photos

I'll start by saying I'm doing this hub in response to another hubber whose hub I had the displeasure of visiting recently. The hub was about winter photography. Photography is something I know a bit about, it's what I spent 2 years in school learning. I don't say that to be aloof or feel like that makes me any better than anyone else who picks up a camera, just to make a point. I went to this hub with all good intentions, I started reading the tips this person was giving on taking good winter photos. OK, sounds pretty good, a lot of the good basics (with some things thrown in that were not so good). Then I looked at the photos and tried to understand why someone telling me how to take good winter pictures can't follow their own instructions. Here are my comments and her reaction (or lack there of) to them." Honestly, the advice you're giving is pretty good but I find the photos not very good. The composition, light use and contrast all seem to me to be off, Sorry if I sound harsh....but"? Peace!! Tom. Well guess what, I got no reply. While that's not really unusual I found it odd that every person that commented and fed her ego she seemed more than happy to reply to and gush over. I thought well let's just try again and see what happens so I left the following comment. "Sorry if my truth offended you and you're right, you don't have to be a pro to take good photos. I just think if you're going to give folks advice in how to take good pictures (and there are actual standards that make up a good photo)that yours should represent what you're talking about. I'm not trying to be mean spirited, just factual". Peace!! Tom. You all probably know what happened next........yep, no reply. I then decided to call her out on the lack of response and here's what she had to say. @justom - I don't necessarily respond to every comment I receive on my hubs. Nonetheless, I did publish your first two comments, but denied your last one. I didn't find your comments particularly helpful, even if critical, because you have not explained the basis for your position. WTF? The last one was probably denied because I called her out and told her that I at least took the time to read and comment on 1 of her hubs (which was more than she bothered to do for me). The point is sometimes the truth is critical, that's life and some of the elite here on HP must come to understand that. Thanks for putting up with my rant, all of you who I have contact with know I'm not a mean spirited person but sometimes just brutally honest. Peace and Happiness!!! ***All the photos above are from photobucket (mine aren't on disc yet) but are examples of what I would consider pretty good shots, in fact far better than our expert!

Oh TOM, is she a beginner? does she have a GOOD camera?I can't go see the photos cause I don't know where they are...and I am not gonna go through all your comments to find it either LOL...

If she posted your comments then why complain? I don't always go back after 2 or 3 comments from the same person, or just don't take the time when I am in a funk, say !!!

...and who are "the Elite on HP? to me no one is better then the other; per say, some have a talent to do things the other doesn't, but trying is OK...isn't it?

You sound upset?? but then I don't know you well enough actually to say that...:O) Hugs Merle Ann

p.s. the photo's are beautiful...thanks for sharing...looks like how it was over Thanksgiving here BRRRRRRRRRRR...

Merle Ann, you seem to be missing the whole point, She's telling folks how to take good winter photos and giving tips that she doesn't even follow herself. If I told you how to take a good photo and showed you a crap one as an example? Point 2, again sorry but you're missing the point here too. She didn't acknowledge my comments, while every other person that kissed her ass got answered. Point 3, the elite of HP are the egos that have 2000 followers, 500 hubs, follow you so you'll read their hubs while never taking the time to read your hubs and if you happen to disagree with them or find any fault they won't approve your comments. Last, yeah I do get upset at folks like this who don't care to hear the truth! Peace and Love!! Tom

OOPs I thought she did answer your comments that was why you got upset???

Ok I see but why let her upset you? You gave her some advise and it her choice to use or not...I know nothing abt this hub or person so hard for me really say much I guess...

And as far as THE ELITE as you call them this place USED to be great then it turned into write about whatever you want as long as it get ads to make you some $ from Google or wherever they get it from...We had some fantastic writers and poets, they all went to FB and then different sites...it is sad but there are many here that do want to just write and learn and be friends...

Seems also there was a LOT of bickering in the Forums and that also all changed...it is weird world on the internet...Sorry If I ruffled your feathers..XXOO didn't mean too...send me an e-mail so I can go read this hub???

:O) Hugs Merle Ann

Okay, I may be the only one laughing at this, but it is soooo funny to me! I totally understand what you're saying. But you do realize that when people go to Costco and buy that $1200 Nikon/Canon, they DO know what they're doing when they press that button thingy on top! LOLOLOL

I have taken lessons from a school. I have been mentored by a well respected photog in the biz. I have taken so many courses on how to light and how to compose and how to click the button. I STILL don't feel that I have enough knowledge to offer people advice. People encourage me to offer what I do know. I still feel that I don't know. LOL If I decide to write an article on "how to photograph ____" you best believe that I have perfected that skill to the point I can do it in my sleep.

The photography industry is inundated with people that have no photography skills, but good business skills. People have gotten used to that. So when they DO see a photo that has good composition, good lighting, and great focus...they think it's sub-par.

So, I guess I'm saying that yeah, I think you were right for calling her out. There are more people out there that need to be called out. Maybe we could ban together and be the Super Photog Caller Outers! SPCO team! LOLOL

bcatgray, I think I love you:-) Really though it is laughable how some folks on HP react when you're just trying to make a valid point. I read your profile and I think you're a lot like me in that in that you don't care to put your nose in the air and tell folks how they should take photos. You also know what your talking about. Like I said I don't claim to be better than anyone else but if you do a hub trying to teach someone how to take a good photo maybe you should know how to yourself. Thanks for reading this rant and I much appreciate your support. Peace!! Tom

LOL!

Sounds like this to me: My shotgun hubs, I know exactly nothing about shotguns, really; just basics, how to shoot, etc; but I do shotgun articles because it's deer season, and I've got lots of shotguns around, so I figured why not?

If a real gun person (and there probably is one or several dozen on hubpages) wrote articles on the exact same shotguns, then those would blow mine out of the water. . . .unless they were just horribly written. All I can do is tell folks what I do know, and try to incorporate a little bit of a story in there (which is usually pretty easy for me), and hope for the best.

It would be more difficult, and probably a lot more time consuming, but if I did hubs on learning guitar for beginners. . . . .I'm positive that I'd wind up contradicting someone somewhere on here as well. . . . .Oh well.

I've always wanted to study photography. I'll never run out of things to do in this life, too much to learn to do and enjoy.

Hey Todd, I think if someone called you out on the shotgun hubs you'd at least admit they knew more than you about them. This chick just fuckin' blew me off (I wish). She followed me and hasn't bothered to read anything of mine. I just get jacked about her attitude, like some of the folks on here, they're just full of shit and write about nothing and expect us to swoon over their silliness. Not me man! Thanks for checking this out and enduring my rant1 Peace!! Tom

I know how you feel about this. I have been taking photos all my life - got my first camera at age about 9 or 10, I think! Still have some of the early shots. I would never presume to write a photography Hub other than one of appreciation of a photographer. I don't know enough about it really and have never had a course in photography.

If someone called me out on something I have written I think I would acknowledge them and take the feedback in the spirit in which it is given. In fact I would welcome feedback, especially from someone who really does know. How else to get better in my writing and my photography? I still feel like a beginner writer and photographer.

Love and peace

Tony

Just some feedback for you - you might want to move your poll capsule up a bit as I think many people will miss it if it stays below the comments! Just a thought.

My dear dear friend, I have never seen you like this and I have know you from the beginning, and it is so true when I read hubs and I wonder what the hell are they talking about. I think I got upset about a hunting hub once and I just can't stant the thought of anyone taking a life, we have these high tech equipment now and these creatures do not have a chance, it's wrong and not fair, so I don't follow them. I just move away, I wish they could be on that other side standing their eating some grass, or looking for some food for your babies and some as...ho... comes up and shoots you when there is a safeway down the street and you can afford to buy food. grrrrrrrrrrr rate this up, we are human and feel what we feel then we have the right to write about it. God Bless America, love you bunches boyfriend, peace & love darski

tonymac, thanks, though I did spend 2 years in photography school my ego doesn't allow me to judge the way folks take pictures. I was just trying to be honest and it was obvious she was ignoring me (which did get me a bit out of my usual peaceful mode). I'm with you, I'm always open to comments, good and bad. I'm not a writer, I even mention that in my profile. I just do HP to have fun and meet nice folks like you. Good point, by the way, that poll does need to move. I was a bit riled up when I did this hub and just wanted to get it done. Thanks much for your comments! Peace!! Tom

My girlfriend Dar, I know, I sound like a raving lunatic don't I? You know I'm easy to get along with but sometimes the button gets pushed and I'm not afraid to let go, especially with an issue like this one. I just can't stand folks that have egos larger than their brains. I'm always happy to learn something! Thank you my beautiful Darski for hanging with me through this rant! Peace and Love!! Tom

Hi Justom, I don't think you sound like a raving idiot at all. (Read your whole hub by I see the one above this that says that so I'm saying no, you don't...) Anyway, you'd think the person could've responded to you, huh? I don't think you were being too harsh either. Someone who is giving advice should at least provide the correct example of the advice they're giving. : )

Hi Erin, I feel kind of bad you picked my rant first. I do however thank you for your comment, sometimes I wonder about some of the folks on HP. They're so self absorbed, I had to laugh at the comments of praise on her hub. Thanks again and check out a couple of my other hubs when you get time (the ones I'd rather be doing :D Peace!! Tom

justom I do get it ! A similiar thing when someone told me they didn't have a dog then guess what ! They only wrote a hub condoning 'electric collars' saying how safe they are !!?? The things some do in the name of love !!

best from jandee

justom profile image

jandee, I'm glad you get it. Did you notice how many of the folks that read this hub still think I did the photos even though I credit photobucket at the top. People are hard to figure out sometimes. Just seems like the world is void of common sense (or as a friend once told me, uncommon sense, if it was common more people would have it. Always glad when you stop by and comment. Peace!!

Like tonymac, I got my first Brownie box camera at an early age and started shooting black and white pictures. Have never studied photography except for a free class offered in a local community center one time regarding portrait photography. Enjoyed that. I'm by no stretch of the imagination an expert but love taking photos and they become my favorite souvenirs when on vacation trips.

Must be fun to know more about what makes a good picture. As Tony says...love and peace. Not much else matters.

Hi Tom-I also don't think you sound like a raving lunatic. It is frustrating when you take time to read a hub and comment and then your blown off because they don't like what you have to say. I think if a comment is given without being mean (like yours)it is the right thing to comment back and learn from it. Just remember Tom that not everyone is as evolved as you. LOL Some people truly can't handle constructive criticism. I love that your honest and say it like it is. Your hub friend, Linda

First off...I LOVE the photographs! Second: Knowing you I am not the least bit surprised that you got ticked off at her. I feel the same way about someone who presents themselves as an expert on something and then clearly has little or nothing to back up that expertise.

You called her out and handled it exactly the way I would have and the way Ive known you to be!

Having worked for an excellent photographer for 15 years, I know good photography when I see it. Its not just about a cute picture or even a beautiful landscape. Everyone, these days, fancies themselves as a photographer. They pick up a digital camera and VOILA! Hey, Im a photog!

Its so much more than aim, point and click! Lighting is a very important aspect of photography. If you dont have good lighting, either natural or artificial, then your photograph is going to suck no matter how pretty the subject might be.

There are so many more aspects of good photography, which you already know, Tom. I just wanted to toss my 2 cents in (even at this late date!)

justom profile image

Hahaha! Thanks Sallie, I knew for sure you'd get it, we're so much alike in that respect. Thanks for checking it out, it's been a fast day so I'm still catching up. FYI, your 2 cents always welcomed and worth way more :-)
