I think hero. I don't care if he surrendered either. If I were one of the last men standing in the middle of a battle like that, I would have eventually thrown up my hands too. It isn't as if he didn't fight hard up to that point. I was in a long small arms fight in Baghdad in 2006 when our convoy was trapped and ambushed. I can remember thinking briefly of an escape plan if we were suddenly overrun while I was shooting, directing, and re-loading. It involved me ditching my gear and swimming down the Tigris River in the dark to the Green Zone. I thought that was just common sense.
