Which is best for your children, University or Travelling?
I think that the best answer for this is BOTH. The best thing for one's future is to attend college to get an education or to gain a skill; however, most colleges have study abroad programs in place so that a student can gain cultural experience while still earning course credits.
My Alma mater, for example, used to send students in the business department to London for spring break and in turn each student got course credit for a class called Strategic Management. We were able to visit some international corporations and class during the day and tour the country in the afternoon and night.
This was an educational and culturally enlightening experience for myself and the other students that were able to attend.
Attending "university" in order to gain an education as well as travel is a great way to achieve a broad education and horizon. Other countries are of course on the list to visit for study abroad depending on one's major and school attending.
