Why do states have crazy shapes? Why couldn't they just draw straight lines? Silly I know, but still
I've always wondered this myself, and I have asked a few people in my life and the most common answer is that the non straight state lines are from landforms like mountains or rivers. i have never researched that answer but I do not think it is true. If you find out please let me know though, maybe when people made the first maps quills couldnt draw straight lines of they were drawing them on a bumpy surface.
There is actually a History Channel program titled, "How the States Got Their Shapes." I saw the one on Texas and the Dakotas. Interesting. Here's a link:

States were drawn by colonial powers, wars, the government, border disputes with other countries, rivers, mountains, and even their own power.

At the risk of being bashed and stepped on here in the forums. I am curious as to why we spend our energy on discriminating and and opposing homosexuality.I am straight and I don't care if you are gay. However, many straight people seem almost obsessed with this. They make it an issue and I don;t...
