In your country is it common for K-12 students to learn and do homework while sitting on the floor?

I am an American but live in Indonesia. I have seen schools for international students and for local students as well. Only in the poorest villages did I ever see students doing study on the floor.

I do have to say that sometimes at home I do layout all my work on the floor and get a lot done, but that never happened in school.

Good morning.  I'm a high school history teacher and I'm trying to think of places scattered around the school where I have not seen students doing homework.  They sit in the halls reading and writing, on bleachers in the gym, between the stacks in the library.  My daughter and her friends frequently spread their material out on the living room floor and study.  Yes, Paul, it is very common.

Can I inquire as to why you asked this question?

Yes, my adult daughters did it when they were in school and now my daughter always seems to lay out her home work projects across the living room floor.  She is an honor student and gets very good grades.  So I guess if it's not broken, don't fix it - and I let her do her homework where she is more comfortable.  Thank you for asking this question Paul Kuehn because now I know my children are not strange, and that we are not the only ones.

I asked the question because I teach in a private school in Thailand which has grades 1-12.  It is very common for the students in all grades, yes even in grade 12, to want to sit on the floor away from their desks during class.  If the students had their choice, there would be no desks and chairs in the classroom.  This could be part of Thai culture where many people, especially the ones from the countryside, even eat all meals sitting on the floor.
