I was brought up the old fashioned way - respect your elders, never give cheak or answer back. Speak when spoken too and always be mannerly and polite. I have to admit that it did me no harm, and I am quite thankful my parents instilled those qualities in to me and smacking me if I was bad, god knows what I would have been like if they had not, probably one of those disrespectful people you see smile

How I was brought up: God, then parents, then teachers, in that order.

My parents taught by example only.

The methods were harsh, but the principles were good.  Obedience, honesty, respect and cooperation were the order of the day, but love was missing.  I make an effort to express love, pride and wholehearted support for my children--and to my mother who thought that such expressions were not necessary.  Perhaps she never received them herself, so there is no blame.

I wrote a hub very much dealing with this subject.  I think it depends on the parenting style that you were raised with.

i was brought up the typical laissez faire way. complete freedom to decide whatever i wanted , was allowed to make all my mistakes and yet my father was always there to support me if something went wrong.
It has made me capable of taking my own decisions and take initiative in life now.Sometimes one did feel the burden of having to take all decisions oneself and i still feel tired of having to decide all the time in all situations even now, but i guess the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
i liked it and brought up my kids the same way.
