Mandarin is a difficiult language but one spoken by over 1 billion people, and an up and coming world power. Not very many Americans know how to speak it, and almost all Chinese take English classes, but many of them aren't very good at English (as I've experienced in traveling there). So the English speaker who at least learns some Mandarin has a great advantage in business--and is also likely to find that they can use both Mandarin and English in conducting business. That is why all my kids are learning Chinese. I do have some Hubs on how to teach yourself Chinese and Chinese learning for kids.
