Can the school system in Ontario, Canada kick a 10 yr old out of school indefinitely?
My 10 yr old grandson has ADHD and OCD. He is going through a med change, and needs his meds refillled on top of that. The school has kicked him out because they can't handle his behaviour. It's not his fault that the doctors can't get the dosage right for his meds. They kicked him out with no intention of letting him back in.
I empathize with your situation. However, all kids attend school to learn and if your 10 yr old grandson is totally disruptive between meds, then his behavior keep others from learning. Especially, if teachers are overwhelmed with trying to keep him focused and quiet.
My suggestion would be a tutor which would keep him up to date with his lessons until his meds are stabilized. Also, if he we my grandson, I would do an internet search for the underlying cause of his ADHD and OCD and seek herbal or nutritional supplements as a remedy more than Pharmaceutical drugs.
thank you chenas for your quick response. I know how overwhelming it can be for Dyl's teachers. He can be quite a handful. He is quite tiny for his age and the meds he is on are the strongest they can be for a regular young adult.
I don't know how it is in Canada, but here in the US every child is guaranteed a free and appropriate education - this means that he needs to be educated, it does not specify where he should go. In my district we have a school for children who have behavior issues. Students attend there with a chance of working their way back to their regular school. Of course, they would need an IEP (individual education plan) to do this, but if your grandson has a diagnosis of ADHD and OCD, this should be possible. I would check it out.
thank you justateacher. i will check it out to see if there is places for him to attend school while he is going through this issue. it isn't much different up here in Canada so hopefully they provide all that you have suggested.
well i live in Ontario Canada, my sister teaches troubled kids and i will say this. if he got kicked out like that, there is more to the story then i'm reading on this question. heck, half the kids these days have the same kinds of problems and they don't get kicked out. my friends son tore a class room up not too long ago and he's still in school so it makes me wonder what the whole story is.
that is something i am wondering about too. When he is taking the meds he is fine. Well behaved and good manners. He helps out when he can too at school but sometimes he snaps and won't listen. it always seems to be when he is transitioning from one type or strength of medication to another. I guess there is a down period when he is supposed to have the old medication out of his system before he can start the new stuff.

Does the school system in your state still teach cursive writing? Many states no longer teach students to write in longhand. I'm glad that, so far, students in California are still required to learn to read and write cursive.

I've been writing an article about the government's involvement in education... It seems to me that our kids would be a lot better off if the government had never gotten involved. But what if the Department of Education was stopped? What would education look like if public schools were closed?...

Is school (for children) a waste of time and money?Thinking back to elementary, middle, and high school I can remember very little that I have actually needed to know outside of basic math and reading. So is there really a purpose to all those years of schooling. Is there a better way that could be...
