Why is everything a mental illness now?
being a drug addict, being obese etc., are all considered mental illnesses. why aren't they just called idiots, lazy, over eaters instead?
Because it enables practitioners to more accurately treat the myriad of conditions that humans have, as opposed to a broad black-and-white approach to mental illness. Some have a greater proclivity toward violence. Some need medications. Some have organic (ie in the DNA) illnesses, some have environmental (affected by treatment). My gut, ego response wants to also say they are idiots, etc. too, but we're talking there about people who probably aren't really mentally ill - that's a different category. And speaking of which, treating obesity as a treatable condition as opposed to a broad branding has resulted in the creation of some amazing medical programs that have resulted in close friends losing hundreds of pounds - Kaiser now has a program for obesity that has - from my own eyes - had tremendous successes.
I can see that it's attractively easy and convenient to put them in one of those pigeon holes. Drug addiction, alcoholism, fatness (sorry, but that is precisely what we mean by obesity, yes?), people who don't look after themselves, smell bad, are ugly, etc., etc. --- all these things can be difficult to live with.
Whatever our religious persuasion, shouldn't we be looking a bit deeper? Even looking in the mirror might help.
I ask the same thing over and over again to myself. but thats the way the world is now...lowering the bar and falling standards.

Mental Illness VS Demonic possessionIn Jesus day, he expelled many devils from possessed people. Do we today, confuse demonic possession for certain forms of mental illness? I believe there is a difference, but... what would you say is the difference? How does one know the difference?
