For those science teachers out there, what do you think are the major goals of science teaching?

We are doing a simple survey on what the other teachers think about the major goals of science teaching.. Stating your name, school and years of teaching will be very much appreciated. We will be having a class discussion afterwards. Thank you!

One important aspect is teaching critical thinking rather than memorizing fact.

In science teaching one has to help the students understand the facts and concepts of life, and relate it to all the science subjects. The teacher has to help the students understand relationships and connections between all the natural things and phenomenon.

Practically demonstrating or applying the facts and theories can help students better understand what they have learned.

Indeed! Learning is incomplete if theories and application will not be combined together..Thank you very much for your answer. ^_^

Science has shaped our contemporary world more than any other aspect of our humanity has. And yet, many students do not find science boring to study.
In teaching science we often forget on overall picture and focus on the individual subjects and thus by this enforced separations students loose the touch with the life of nature that is found not in parts, but in the whole, light, air and space...

I think we need to replace believing with reasoning and there is no better subject for it than science. Often it is not the teacher that is the problem but the learner, over the years successive generations of students have lost the ability and willingness to reason, to explore, to learn...Over 20 years ago when I started to teach, the senior teacher told me that I should never expect to be able to teach anything but that I should put a lot of effort into helping students to learn...
