Unless you want your children to learn what 'the people in charge' want them to learn as far as history and social dynamics, I highly recommend private schooling and extra-curricular education. Such as Aristotle or Ayn Rand; anything that teaches them to think for themselves.
The problem with government run anything is that there will never be a truly objective education. It is a basic free market principle: because private schools have to compete with other private schools for money, the competition will naturally drive the quality of education up. As compared to a state school, which only has to meet minimum standards to receive federal or state funding.
