It would have to be Spanish. The reason being is because it has become like America's second language. Also, I would love to know what the employees at the Mexican eatery's are saying about me. smile

Despite practicality, I have to say Finnish! My family came to the US from Finland a few generations before me, and I've always been kind of regretful that all of the Finnish-speakers were gone or very old when I was born.

German. My partner and I want to go to Germany for a vacation next year but neither of us speak the language. I already speak French and we both share some Spanish. So a fourth language would be welcome.

I think if would have to be Russian. Reason to make exploring such a large land mass a little easier.  Its 6200 miles from Moscow to Vladivostok a trip I hope to make before I to long.

I would say Spanish. This is because my family lives in El Paso, TX, which is a stones throw away from the Ciudad Juarez. It's almost like English is the second language here. haha

Polish, as my granddad came from Poland. I have already learnt German (at school, but also from my nan who was Austrian), and I would love to do this to be able to teach my daughter.

I'd have to say Latin, it is a large part of Spanish, French and Italian making those languages easier to learn or just understand.  It also is so largely used in legal and medical terms, it would be useful in understanding diagnosis or court procedure.  It is the language of history having been the world language for so long, many older sources presume the knowledge of Latin. Lastly, it would be a very good way to understand much about the English language and the origin of words.

I've been studying it but it's very slow going.  It'd be great to just be instantly fluent. I've got lots of reading to do.

Mandarin, because that is the second language I have been studying for several years.  I'm not too far from fluent, but the closer I get, the more effort is required to get a little bit further.  Do you have any good instant language learning pills?  I'm in the market.

I would choose Mandarin, because it is the one language I studied that I was not able to learn,  Turkish, Maori, Japanese, and German were more difficult for me than the romance languages, but possible.  Mandarin eluded me-- although I can understand a bit-- general topic kind of understanding, I could never make myself understood AT ALL.  Frustrating!  I would also like to be fluent in Mandarin because many of my adult students are from China.
If not that, then sign language and braille -- because sign language looks beautiful and I would love to learn to speak without words, and braille because it would be handy to be able to read in the dark.
