Agriculture, definitely. If it had never been invented, we'd still be living as hunter gatherers. Although I wouldn't mind so much, at least we'd be living on a cleaner, more fertile planet. But yes, without agriculture the world we know today wouldn't exist.

I agree with you, but a lot of people (maybe not a lot) argue that it is the worst thing that ever happened.  However, without agriculture, we wouldn't have complex societies with specialist workers.

Yes I agree with you; Agriculture is a significant advancement in the evolution of civilisation. Just a curiosity on your realisation.... Would you   then be so wise about making so clear distinction between cleaner planet and the present???

I will play devils advocate here and say isn't that what makes us human?  So is that an advancement in human history or just part of the evolutionary process in creating humans?

The question is impossible to answer because each great discovery leads to a greater discovery. Discovery of fire and the invention of the wheel lead to advances in agriculture.

The discovery of oil gave us the industrial revolution.

A World War shows us how to harness the power of atomic energy.

Computer technology put man on the moon and returned him to earth.

The internet has given us instant communications with almost anybody, anywhere in the world.

You can ask what was the first great invention or discovery, but the greatest is yet to come.

Then couldn't you say the great discovery that leads to what you think the greatest discovery is, is the most important advancement in human history?  Also, I never asked what the first great invention was, but the "most important advancement".

You can take any approach you want.  The wheel was taught in  my school days as the greatest invention. I think it was more of a discovery.

The hub is about evolution of agriculture in the pre-historic era. The hub suggests that agriculture evolved as an effort to generate surplus and to increase food security of the primitive groups. read more
