I would have to venture to say this must be caffeine. There are so many products in the world that contain caffeine it is really hard to get around it.

I say coffee or caffeine of any kind. They put caffeine in everything it seems and people can drink coke and eat chocolate to get more.
But not that many people are addicted to chocolate so I say coffee.

Could it be the addiction to technology in some form or another?

I do not know where you are getting your statistics because in my experience 90% of the world do not even share the same type of experiences, and certainly do not share access to technology. How can you say they are addicted to the same thing? Should your question be 90% of the western world? 90% of the world in which you inhabit?
