Is it appropriate for Teachers to hug their students?

(I'm not referring to cute little kids)

Not sure.  Yesterday I was at my kids elementary school.  I am the PTA president.  We were having an activity and I kept wondering that same thing.  Some of the teachers were hugging and others weren't.

I think it's ok to give a student a hug, if it's to congratulate a student for a very good job or if a student is really sad or upset about some personal issues.. just as long as the teacher/student has no other personal intentions to hug. i think  for as an encouragement or caring hug is O.K to give...

I think it should be avoided as a general rule with a few exceptions such as a case of great loss, grief, or injury.  Even then they should make sure there are plenty of witnesses who can attest to the innocence of the teacher.  Many insurance companies recommend the buddy system and that people who work with kids should do so in pairs so they can back each other up in case of an accusation.

Only if both the parents and the student sign written waivers, and only if both a male and female monitor are present.  Can't be too careful.

I work at a school with a hands off policy, that said the kids hug me all the time. I am often surprised from an enthusiastic hug that is more of a tackle! It is a difficult situation sometimes because of the hands off policy and my in ability to instal a belief that hugging is in anyway bad. I guess if the children are hugging me that is one thing but if I try to hug them, especially when they don't ask for a hug or indicate they want one, that could be the bigger problem. Allowing them to hug me should give me some protection against any sort of accusation or someone getting the wrong idea.

Yes, I was hugged a few times as I went to my 1st 12 years, and actually its those teachers I still remember today, because it is was all the events that brought that hug to exsistence and the hug was the final moment of exceptance that we both had in some way touch the others sole and affected the way they will remember the past and even the force that will give them reason to forge on. My forth Grade teacher mrs Byrd, In Central Elementry in angleton, Texas, She was my math teacher, and to alot of the kids she seemed a mean teaher to hear them talk, then but I bet as the years unfolded like me, they came to appreciate what she sent us out into the world with under our hats, She was very serious about us learning Math but more so on having the skill to use it with ease, I had failed the fourth the first time around , because I had an accident that kept me out of shool the year eariler, she not only got me back on track, but set me on the course of being a gifted child who saw obtaining knowledge a privilage, and resonsibility to ones Family and Country as well as Oneself. because the greater the knowledge, the stronger the wisdom on how to use it to serviing all that should mattering in living a meaningful and complete life.

It certainly depends on the situation. If it is something congratulatory or celebratory ("You got accepted into Stanford?! Congratulations!") then a hug is warranted. However, if it is something excessively friendly (a "good morning" hug before class every day), then something needs to be said. There is a grey area separating inappropriate and appropriate conduct which common sense can always resolve, but is so hard to put into legal terms.

Depends on the character of the student. He may consider it as he likes. Most teenagers give wrong meanings to such ways of love

Appropriate for whom? the teacher or the student...
Many will say it is hands off at all times as the culture of squeal and sue is ripe everywhere around the world.
should a student and teacher find themselves mutually attracted i would suggest a freezing shower and a move for either or both to somewhere the sun don't shine to cool down.
Love after all concurs all they say so waiting should hold no fear for true love.
