This article is about the medical specialty.

Surgery is an ancient medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, or to help improve bodily function or appearance.

An act of performing surgery may be called a surgical procedure, operation, or simply surgery. In this context, the verb operate means to perform surgery. The adjective surgical means pertaining to surgery; e.g. surgical instruments or surgical nurse. The patient or subject on which the surgery is performed can be a person or an animal. A surgeon is a person who practises surgery. Persons described as surgeons are commonly physicians, but the term is also applied to podiatrists, dentists ( and veterinarians. A surgery can last from minutes to hours, but is typically not an ongoing or periodic type of treatment. The term surgery can also refer to the place where surgery is performed, or simply the office of a physician, dentist, or veterinarian.

Elective surgery generally refers to a surgical procedure that can be scheduled in advance because it does not involve a medical emergency. Plastic, or cosmetic surgeries are common elective procedures.

One of the oldest, dating back to the days of the old testament - the male circumcision is known today to be one of the oldest, yet still practiced surgical procedures of our time.  Little to no improvements have been made in technique other than anesthesia of local medication to numb the direct site location of the snipping of the foreskin. Today, the procedure is nearly the same.  However the advanced knowledge of infection control and the control of post op infections has made this procedure practically harmless in the % of actual post op infections.  However, during the times of the teachings of the bible, there are many noted events of male infections that may include amputation of the penis and even death resulted in the complications of the ancient procedure during that era of our past life.

Trepanation, or trephining, may be the oldest surgical procedure.  For whatever reason (to release demons, to drain blood due to a head injury, to relieve pressure from swelling) a hole is drilled into the skull.
