From studies and observations of extended family and associates, statements from my parents, uncles, and aunts in addition to blogs and comments, parents of large and very large families (6 or more children per household) expect children to teach and raise themselves. The typical parents of large and very large families maintain that their children can adequately raise and teach themselves. They are of the school that giving their children individualized attention is spoiling and pampering them.
They believe that children do not need so much parental involvement in their lives. They also maintain that that if their children must swim or sink psychologically and/or emotionally. They are of the opinion that if their children psychologically/emotionally swim, fine or if they psychologically/emotionally drown, tough on them. They also do not care about the material well-being of their children. They maintain that if their children do not have, they can do without or work for it. It is typical for children of large families to work during childhood to have the things that other children have.
They also do not believe in financially planning for their children's future as parents of small families routinely do. They are of the school that they will have what they want without considering the financial ramifications of an additional child on the family. For children of large families, tertiary education is a dream. They are lucky if they complete secondary education, for many have to drop out of school to assist in supporting their families. In large families, as opposed to small families, children assume adult roles very young in life. They have to raise and support themselves whereas in small families, parents assume the more active role in their children's lives.
