   Ooh...the Great Backyard Bird Count - what's this??!  I LOVE my cardinals, sparrows, red finches, robins, crows, some type of small red headed woodpecker, and even my bluejays that visit my backyard feeder year-round.  Close by my in-laws have hummingbirds, orioles, yellow finches grackles (grr), red-winged black birds and many more I lose time just gawking over.  I'm in NWPA.

      WOW! Lots of birds! The Audubon Society and some partners sponsor a backyard bird counting event (15 minutes or longer, your choice), a Photo Contest, and more at www.birdsource DOT org/gbbc  I think I'll count in Feb. 2014. You beat me already!

   Actually, my backyard extends over a mile across our farm and there are so many species of birds I won't list them all here. Besides all of the aforementioned birds, I can add many species of raptors including Hawks,Osprey, and Bald Eagle. Believe it or not, I once saw a large green parrot in the cornfield near my house. Thank goodness I had a witness with me at the time.

   Being the bird nerd that I am, I do participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count.   In fact, I have participated in the last 3 bird counts.  I have an amazing woodland for my 'yard', which is home to several red-tailed hawks, ravens and crows.  There are kingbirds and blue jays, cardinals and scarlet tanagers.
   
   Chickadees, titmice and gold finches are frequent visitors to my bird feeders, as are cardinals, juncos, purple and house finches.  Just the other day I heard a wren offering it's 'teakettle, teakettle' call for all to hear!  The wood thrushes and robins are still abundant; and every morning a resident flock of geese heads for the nearest farmer's pond for breakfast and a swim.
   
   It is safe to say that I am surrounded by a host of nature's colorful and energetic songbirds, as well as turkeys, sparrows and woodpeckers, and the occasional pheasant.  Is it any wonder I am a bird nerd?!

      Love it!  I'm so interested in their different calls...makes me stop and stand in my tracks.  I thought of so many other birds I see living right off of Lake Erie that I hadn't included in my first post...think I'll turn "bird nerd" too!

      That is amazinng to me. I have seen them only in Blenden Woods Metro Park. That's the first tie I ever saw baby turkeys as well.
