What is the difference between 'leave' and 'vacation'

   What is the difference between 'leave' and 'vacation'
   
   I would appreciate if someone could differentiate between the two terms. I was planning to be off from work, was not sure which one to use for that? All help is appreciated.

   That's somewhat region-specific. Either can be used in the case of work, though "vacation" seems more common in the US and "leave" more common in the UK. I'm in the US, and "vacation" is usually used for planned time off, especially when it's for leisure activities. "Leave" is used for emergency or longer-term absences, such as maternity leave right after having a baby, or medical leave for an injury or illness. Many employers have to count them differently as well. For voluntary vacation time, you usually have to work to build up the time before you can request it off, and it's likely paid. Many types of leave are legally mandated -- i.e. an employer can't deny someone leave for a new baby, a death in the family, etc. -- but may not be paid.Hopefully this helps a bit

   Many companies today cal it Personal Time or something similar because they lump your sick leave, birthday, vacation and any other days they give you with pay all together.
   
   This is actually much better for those of us who are very healthy and almost never need to call in sick. You can take sick leave without calling in pretending to be ill.
   
   There are different rules regarding taking off and you usually have to give notice and possibly get approval to take your days depending on your employer's policy. Read the employee manual for details.

   On a basic vocabulary level, I think of vacation as time taken off for leisure or a trip, and leave as time taken off for other reasons (personal, medical family etc.)
   
   If your question more relates to what type of time-off you'll use and how to request it from your employer yu should look at the personal time policy which you were (or should have been) given when you were hired, as every company is going to have slightly different policies.  In one of my past jobs, we had vacation time and sick time.  Sick time could be used for sickness or for medical appointments, while we had to use vacation time for everything else.  In another job I got a designated number of sick days, personal days and professional days all of which had to be used for their separate intended purpose.  And now in my current job and my most recent previous job I just have a "personal leave" time bank, and these hours are used for anything I will be taking leave for whether it is vacation, illness, an appointment etc.   To make a long story short, every  company is going to be slightly different.

   I believe that 'leave' can simply refer to time off work, so you can take leave to spend a few days at home, whereas 'vacation' means that you are going somewhere on holiday most likely abroad somewhere.

   Leave means when you are go away from your job for certain time.Vacation means a free time gets annually.

   vacation refers to the annual and usually paid time you get off work. In western countries, most people get at least two weeks.A vacation is either voluntary or part of a person's work criteria. One or more people can decide to take a day, week. While leave is time when one has permission to be absent from work or from duty.

   Hello Sir,
   Leave means a short term holiday which you want to apply due to some emergency condition
   Whereas Vacation means a  long term holiday given to relax yourselves from stress.Always vacation will be off a month holiday
