A couple of alternative ways:

A quick way to get to 40$ is to first know that 10% is 280 (because you can always find 10% by moving the decimal point over one play).

Now that you know 10% is 280, multiply 280 by 4 (because 40 is 4 times 10).

4 x 280 =1120. Just add the 1120 to $2800. (You get $3,920)

Yet another easy way: Multiply $2800 by 140% (because $2800 is 100% of itself, and you want to add the other 40%).

You should multiply 2800.00 by 1.4...

On a calculator you would enter "2800" "x" "1.4" and that should yield 140% of $2800...

You could also do it by multiplying .4 or 40% by 2800 and then adding the answer to 2800.

On a calculator you would enter "2800" "x" ".4" and then add that answer to 2800.

Either way it should equal $3920

Hope this helps.
