Does Self-Awareness have to be a function of complex order or is it much simpler?
Such a conundrum. I liken that to the whole forest thing...if a tree fell onto an axeman in the forest, and there was no one around to hear, would he scream?
Perhaps I can justify this question, though, by explaining the theories on what made man the being he is today--a being with society, self reflection, and the ability to not club a female over the head and drag her back to the cave with him.
...usually.
I'll get cracking on both, right away.
Self-awareness is its own reward, in that by practising it you become more aware of yourself, of others and of the world around you - therefore your experience of life is enhanced.
Complexity is not required.

In a short theory, I think everyones thoughts can be summed into logic, faith, and self-awareness. I believe some of our minds operate mostly on logical thought while some operate more on faith. I believe self-awareness is a 3rd person perspective to view and analyze how your individual thoughts...
