An allele is a different form of the same gene. Genes are DNA sub units which code for a particular protein or trait.
Take the petal colour gene of flowers. It determines the colouur of the flower. If the flower can be either red or white then it will have 2 alleles for the colour gene.

I could not find any definition that would really explain what an allele is, but this is understandable enough...
