People dream everyday in different levels at different moments. We have all experienced dreaming at one point in our life. There are times that dreams can be clearly remembered but most often it is forgotten. It has been stored in our unconsciousness level that its contents has not yet reached our consciousness. There were different theories written about dreams - - - theories about the psychic activity of the waking state, the paranoia and amentia of dream, the partial wakefulness, the prevailing dream, and the phantasy (fantasy) dream. There were also a lot of contradictions and disagreements about these principles. However, we shall focus more on the possible meaning of our dreams rather than dwelling much on these theories.

What does dream means? I assume that we are familiar with the Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, Ph.D. He defines dream as a simple fulfillment of a wish. “He believes that dreams begin in a form that is as rational as waking thoughts, but that they are disguised because the conscious cannot accept them. The original dream is called the latent dream, and the disguised dream – the one you remember when you wake up – is called the manifest dream.”1   So what does our dream possibly denotes? It is basically a sound expression of the unconsciousness. The dreamer seems to be brought to another world. Our dreams are usually derived from our experiences, fears, anxieties, or wants in life. It can sometimes be found in the events of our childhood. We usually dream of what we see, what we have said or done, what we have undergone, and what we are yearning to achieve or our aspiration.

I have experienced having my own dreams. I dreamt of starting to have white hairs at an early age. It was only after I have studied about the interpretation of dreams that I understood it. It was all because of my fear of growing old that I always wanted to look good. I have also tutored a 2nd grade student who always dreamed of being in a dark place. He was afraid to be left alone. His parents later found out that his nanny locked him in his closet when she gets mad when nobody was around. Dreams can be a reflection of our uncertainties in life. Hi Daniella, it's good to know that we the same interest in Psychology. I found dream analysis as a very interesting topic. If you notice it, those people who have traumatic experiences tend to dream a lot when they go to sleep. Its just one of the many examples about what dream may denotes to us. I believe it works well if we study it at a deeper sense. Enjoy what you do and let's explore on these possibilities in life.

Hi, Tina, I always dream that my teeth are crumbling! seriously, I have no idea why. Any ideas about it? cheers Nell

Tina, This was *interesting*. I was struck by how contrary the interpretations could be... like the oranges and gray hair, etc. I'll have to bookmark this for the rare occassions that I do remember a dream. I hope you haven't created an obsession for me. ;) An interesting and enjoyable hub.

Hi Nell, teeth has been one of the common dreams of people. One concept of dreaming about teeth reflects a person's anxiety about appearance and others' perception. Our dream is now an overexaggeration of our worries and anxiety. If we dream that our teeth is falling may denotes our fear of getting old and less feminine or unattractive. It is also said that if we dream about loose, rotten or missing teeth, it may signify that somebody close to us may be very sick or near death. If you dream that your teeth had been knocked out, it may be a sign of sudden misfortune.

However, to dream that you admire your teeth indicates pleasant opportunities and fulfillment of a wish.

Thank you for asking about teeth dreams. This is an additional information for our readers.

Have a good day!

Have a good day!

Hi Tina, very interesting article. Dreams are so strange. When I was young (very young) I used to keep a list of dreams and their meanings, list that I copied from a colleague at schoo. I still remember one line:

If you dream about dirty water that means that you hear bad news or you may have an argument with somebody.

I'm a very good dreamer myself. In rare occasions i my dreams came true. One was very scary!

Thanks for a great hub.

Intersting Hub - I don';t think however that dreams can be interpreted quite so easily as the "dream dictionaries' would have us believe. I once had a therapsit who said to me that everything in my dreams was me, and that I should start to see where that idea would lead. That weas interesting, to say the least.

Love and peace

Tony

Hi Tony, dream dictionaries are just there to guide their readers in their interpretation. As I have mentioned in the article, our dreams are derived from our experiences, fears, anxieties, uncertainties, or wants in life. It may even be traced back from our childhood days. So your therapist was just right in saying that everything in your dreams was more about you. I find it very interesting too.

Thank you for your comment.

Personally, I haven't encountered colors in my dreams. But it may mean differently for each colors such sky blue for peace, yellow for cowardice or being afraid of something or brown for nature. Its significance may come together with the scenario in a person's dream.

Thank you for reading this hub. I really appreciate your comment.

Hello! Last night I had the strangest dream... I was cooking a meal.. It smelled great, looked great. I couldn't wait to eat! Then I realized I was cooking a t-shirt. Even though I knew it was rediculous, I continued to finish cooking and then put it on a plate. What does this mean?!?!

TINA V profile image

TINA V 6 years ago Author

Hi Michelle,

When you dream that you are cooking, it may signify your creativity and a need for emotional expression. It may also indicate your desire to influence, control or nurture others. It may suggest that you have a wish for an affection or attention of another person. On the otherhand, t-shirt implies that you need to slow down and take things easy. If you dream cooking a t-shirt, it may be a reminder that you have to laid back a little bit of your nurturing side and relax especially in your personal life. It may be that you have let others become too dependent on you.

I hope this helps you in your dream analysis. Thank you for checking out this article. Have a great week!

There is this one recurring dream that I have been experiencing since I was in my teens and only recently - suddenly out of the blue I had the same dream that someone is chasing me and I am falling down this never ending hole. It does scare the hell out of me because it is so vivid and feels so real! especially the actual fear I experience lingers with me for a couple of days after but I really don't know what it means

I enjoyed reading this hub :)

TINA V 5 years ago Author

Hi Kavita,

Thank you for sharing your dream. I really appreciate it. Here’s my interpretation - - -

To dream that you are being chased by someone denotes your fears and feeling of anxieties. It may signify that you have some unresolved circumstances or situations that you have feared in life. The chaser/ attacker can also be a representation of the dreamer. It can represent the person’s own feeling of anger, jealousy, worries, phobias, or even the feeling of love that can be manifested in a threatening figure of being “someone”. The action of falling in a hole indicates how you respond to pressure or stress and cope with your fears and anxieties. Falling indicates a person’s instabilities, insecurities, inferiority, or sense of failure. For instance, it may be the fear of losing a job, declining in school, fear of bullying, failure in love or relationship, violence, sexual assault, or even lost of self-esteem. The person may feel overwhelmed in controlling some aspects in life. The hole may mean that the person has a feeling of emptiness inside. When the person dreams of falling in a hole, it may signify difficulties or drawbacks in life that there exists a feeling of being stuck on that situation. It may indicate that the dreamer is in trouble and doesn’t know how to deal with it. To gain a better understanding of your dream, you may need to ask yourself the following questions:

1. Who is chasing you? Is the chaser known or unknown?

A shadow figure of an attacker symbolizes the weaknesses or characteristics being rejected by the dreamer. This will help identify the source of the dreamer’s fears and anxieties.

2. What is the distance between you and the attacker?

The distance indicates how close the dreamer is to the issue. If the attacker runs close to the dreamer, it may mean that the problem is still there. If the dreamer keeps a wide distance from the attacker, it may mean that the problem is going away.

3. What are your fears and anxieties in life?

Identifying the dreamer’s fear and anxieties in life will help gain a better understanding of the main source of the problem.

4. Does these fear and anxieties relate to any unresolved circumstances or situation in life?

Relating the dreamer’s fears and anxieties to any unresolved situations will help the person face the issue, point out the need for change or self-discovery.

I hope these would help you understand your dream. Have a great weekend!

Great hub. I read Kavita above here and I may as well tell my similar dream from decades ago. It was after I returned from Vietnam. During the war there was running and apprehension often.

But after returning, I was chased by men in black. They were only men in black and were not distinguishable in my mind from anyone. Often in my dream I would dream of waking up to "enemies in my room, over me, etc. I would try to rise and, of course I was asleep and couldn't - but - somehow - my consciousness knew that I could not get up. It was imperative for my life to get up. I actually strained to break my sleep and stand up to fight. Occasionally I threw myself erect or over in the bed.

I eventually controlled myself to run toward the attackers at all times. That is what I had to do in real life. When things get really heavy and I have a doubt of my mode of operation, I only need to think of the person or persons that will allow me to do what I need to do. I pray that truth will always bear me out.

I was able to subdue those dreams and the demons in them.

Years later, I dreamed my daughter was kidnapped and terror was the first emotion. I had to subdue this nightmare too. I can't say what others should do but I have to run through or to the attack. God bless Tina.

Hi Micky,

Happy New Year! I’m sorry for this late reply. It was just a busy holiday. I wish you good health and more blessings for 2011. Thank you also for sharing your personal dreams. Here’s my interpretation ---

For your first dream:

Dreams can sometimes be brought about by painful memories from our waking life to our unconscious. Being in a Vietnam War was not easy. I salute you for your bravery. It can already be considered as a traumatic experience to many veterans. In my understanding, it can signify some disturbing situations that might have happened wherein you felt the need to shield yourself, which eventually appeared through a dream.

As I have mentioned to Kavita, “to dream that you are being chased by someone denotes your fears and feeling of anxieties. It may signify that you have some unresolved circumstances or situations that you have feared in life.”

To see men in black represent masculine characteristics or a father figure, which may be unknown to the dreamer. It may particularly pertains to being pushy, authoritative, intimidating, strong willed, and logical. The color black suggests that the dreamer needs to examine his unconscious in order to gain a better understanding of oneself. Black also symbolizes mystery, danger, darkness, isolation, and suppression. On the positive side, it may represent potentials and opportunities in life.

If these men in black were also the enemies seen in your dream, it denotes the inner conflict of emotions or problems of the dreamer. It may indicate that there are some aspects of self-denial or rejection on someone. If you see them in your “bedroom”, it refers to some piece of yourself that you kept private. The way you deal with your enemies in your dream represents the solutions or steps that you take to resolve the conflict. You might have fought and struggled in life, but you also experienced failure. When you occasionally threw yourself erect or over the bed, it may suggest feelings of helplessness or disconnection from others. It may imply that your ideas or views might have separated you from those around you. It can be a sign that the dreamer might need to tone down his strong personality.

If a person dreams that he runs towards his attacker, it denotes pent-up emotions such as frustrations, rage or anger. It might have been brought about by the feeling of being wronged by someone. It is more beneficial that such feelings can be expressed through dreams. Dreams of an attack can be a way of confronting some situations that the dreamer might have been avoiding in life. It can be a means of releasing suppressed emotions instead of expressing it in the waking life. If you have controlled yourself of running towards the attacker, it suggests triumph of overcoming inner conflict.

For your second dream:

To see your daughter in your dream corresponds to your connection with her and the attributes that may characterize her.

To see someone you know being kidnapped suggests that there are characteristics or aspects of the person that you choose not to be express to you. It may mean that you might have been trying to control something in your daughter, which may affect your relationship with her.

Feelings expressed through dreams represent the dreamer’s actual feelings in life. The feeling of terror may be a sign of disappointment or loss of someone in life.

To gain a better understanding of your dream, you may need to ask yourself the following questions:

1. What is your present relationship with your daughter?

Identifying your real connection with the person being kidnapped will help the dreamer understand the main source of the problem.

2. What are areas in your daughter’s life or features about her that you don’t like or refused to accept?

The aspects, attributes or qualities that the dreamer might have been avoiding will help identify the relationship problem.

3. How do these areas or features of your daughter affect you?

Identifying the effects of these areas to the dreamer will help understand the present relationship with the person being kidnapped.

4. Does the feeling of terror still continually exist? Or are there any other new feelings relating to the kidnapping?

Identifying the feelings about an object or a happening in a dream may help the person deal with the situation. Acceptance to your true feelings is also needed.

I hope these would help you understand your dreams. Thank you also for reading my other hubs. It’s good to exchange ideas through Hubpages. Have a great week!

Vanesa 4 years ago

I was wondering what if you have a dream about your own death is that bad or good?

TINA V profile image

TINA V 4 years ago Author

Hi Vanessa, thank you for checking out this hub. When you dream about your own death, it doesn’t automatically have a negative implication. Although it is quite alarming to see yourself dying, but it may signify that you might be anxious or worried about certain things such as a relationship or health problems. But it may also indicate a transformation, self-discovery, growth, adjustments, or drastic changes ahead of you; which can either be good or bad. You might be in a situation that you are trying to get out, and this dream might be one of your defense mechanism to escape from it. I suggest you try to check out some present and past situations that are affecting you right now. It may indicate a way out from your old life. I hope this helps. Enjoy your week!

Vanesa 4 years ago

Thank you, I kno I dream about it sometimes when something does happen. I have another question, what does it mean you dream of someone death but that person past away already? Sorry about all these death question, from reading the hub I got worried.

TINA V profile image

TINA V 4 years ago Author

Hi Vanessa, you don't need to worry too much. If you dream of someone that already passed away, it may generally signify a way to help deal with issues involving loss and grieving. But it will also depend on the dreamer’s relationship to the dead person. If you dream of a family member, relative or somebody close to you, it may indicate you’re longing for them and the dreamer may be attempting to reawaken the times shared with them. But if a person dream of the death of a child (not related to him), it may implies that the dreamer needs to let go of his/ her immaturity and start to be more serious about his life. I hope this answers your question. Enjoy your week!

Hi, last night in my dream, my manager was giving me an oil tin (cooking oil) which is filled 1/4 th and saying me to keep it. This dream is on my mind a lot, curious to knw wat it means. Thank you

TINA V profile image

TINA V 4 years ago Author

Hi Shirley,

To see your manager in a dream may signify issues of one’s power and control; while to see cooking oil may represent something smooth. To see your boss handing you 1/4th cooking oil may suggest a smooth transition of a partial bigger responsibility and authority at work for you to handle. Try to consider your present relationship with your boss; are you afraid of your boss or do you have a good relationship with him? This may give you an idea of any work-related things that you need to face in your office and even in your personal life. I hope this helps you. Thank you for checking out this hub.
