After the second world war the US absorbed much of the British and French colonies around the world. Korea was divided between communist north and capitalist south when the US could not win that war and elections were deep sixed. Viet Nam was a colonial war as a proxy between communism and capitalism. The eternal war is between capitalist, monarchist, elitists and socialist, democratic, commoners.
Britain couldn't read the mind of the colonist that is how they failed...It was more over vacation spots for the new settlers but the empire their plan read my hub about this: colonists' desire for independence?
