Any books or research on African slaves committing suicide?

I don't know of any - but the kind of mind that runs this kind of thing is normally meticulous and orderly, and like the Nazi extermination camps, they often keep unbelievably detailed records.  I am not sure any would have survived but I expect you should be able to find some plantation slave records still.

Why did you post this in the sandpit?  Is slavery just a game to you or what?

Do you really think there would have been records of it? hmm

I get that these owners were business people, but do you seriously think that they would have labeled the death a suicide, even if it was?

They would have simply considered it a loss and discarded it, as though a piece of garbage. You've got to be kidding?

Any statistics would be distorted. For the above reason. wink

And it would have been considered property crime too I guess, like in the military where attempted suicide is prosecuted as damage to government property.

Regardless of placement...this topic raises an important question..

From Frederick Douglass to other observers at the time it was noted that, especially among male slaves, suicide was an alternative of choice...

I will be reviewing info I have documented on this, and will search more...

    Good post topic..
