I normally don't have a problem with genetically modified food, but after reading today of the goats in the US which have been engineered to produce spider silk, I am beginning to think scientists are perhaps going too far.

What did they say the objective of this is supposed to be? And how on earth would a goat do this?

The goats produce the silk in their milk.  Spider silk is one of the strongest known substances, but spiders wouldn't produce enough.  Plus it would prove quite difficult to milk spiders.  The goats will produce huge quantities of spider silk.
