Classification of Animals
Animals may be classified according to the type of food they eat. These are:
A. Herbivores – There are animals that only eat plants. Examples of such animals are goats, cows, horses and carabaos which eat grass. Other examples are deer and sheeps. Snails and koalas are also examples of herbivorous animals. Snails eat plants while koala eat eucalyptus leaves. Grasshoppers are also herbivorous. Both nymphs and adults eat many kinds of vegetation, especially succulent types.
B. Carnivores - Carnivores are meat-eating animals. The following are examples of carnivorous animals.
1. Starfish eats oyters and sea urchins.
2. Insectivorous bats feed on flying insects.
3. Foxes and wolves eat deer or moths.
4. Spiders and leeches suck up animal body fluids.
5. Lizard eat insects.
6. Cheetahs feed on gazelle.
C. Omnivores – These animals that eat both plants and animals. Examples are earthworms which feed on decaying plants and animals. Protozoans and mussels eat microscopic plants and animals. Human beings are omnivorous.
