Degree Programs for Moms

Twenty years ago the only option for college meant long lines at registration; long lines at the bookstore buying text books; and fighting to find a parking spot less than a mile from campus. Today, that has all changed.

Top 5 reasons to choose an online college

Getting a degree online has gone from an obscure possibility, to a full-fledged reality. It can be difficult going to school if you lack transportation, have to work, have young children, or have a disability. College on the internet is especially beneficial for you. However, more and more seniors graduating from high school are opting for an online school too. What are the advantages choosing online college learning?

Benefits from distance learning

The first benefit is flexibility. One of the most difficult things about going to school is juggling your schedule. This can be especially true if you work while going to school. Taking classes on the internet means you can go to class at your convenience.

If you are a morning person and want to get your work done at dawn, you can start at five and finish by breakfast. If you are a night owl, you can play all day, and start your work at eight in the evening. Insomniacs can get a degree during those long hours of being wide-awake in the middle of the night. You have complete control over what time of day you go to school.

Another benefit is saving time. Consider how many hours the average person spends getting ready for school, driving there, and then back home. With online college, you go as far as your computer. You don’t even have to be dressed…literally! You can work in whatever attire (or lack of it) you choose. Let’s say it takes you forty-five minutes to get ready, another forty-five to drive to the campus, and another fifteen to park. You save yourself almost two hours a day just by staying home. In those same two hours, you could have completed two classes. Time isn’t all you will save either.

A further benefit of taking online classes is cost savings. While the cost of online school tuition is relative to the cost of going to a campus, some schools are less expensive so it pays to shop around and compare colleges. You will also save quite a bit on incidental costs. You won’t have to buy food out. You won’t have to pay for gas, parking fees, or tolls. You can live at home (this will be a huge savings). You may also save on textbooks. Online colleges often have some class material available online.

One other benefit worth mentioning is the ability to accelerate your program. While traditional college can prevent you from finishing early due to scheduling conflicts and full classes, this is not as prevalent with online school. You can take more classes, and not have to worry about whether they are Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday. You can take as many as you can handle when you take them on the internet.

The final consideration is a blend of both online learning and traditional college. If you want to have the class room experience, but find it difficult to take a full load due to your particular circumstance, you may consider a blend of online college learning and campus learning. Taking a few classes as a distance learner will afford you the luxury of designing a schedule that will fit perfectly with your life. it will also give you the social interaction you may desire.

Choosing the right college

If you are getting ready to make a decision about going to college, either as an adult returning after years of being away, fresh out of high school, or somewhere in between-- it is worth exploring. To make it more fun, get your friends together and sign up at the same time. It doesn’t cost anything to check out and you know what they say, “you won’t know unless you ask”. Getting a degree online may be just be the answer for you and your future. Explore your options today to see if online college learning is for you.

Thanks Kimberly. I think it is such a great option now because it really allows many more people- especially moms and dads with little kids- to be able to get a degree. Thank you for your comments!

This is informal....a friend of mine and myself were talking about online colleges she is currently enrolled at Kaplan and we were discussing the fear of online college not being recognized as legit schooling and we were wondering if many companies acknowledge online degrees

From my experience (which is limited), an online school is recognized the same. Most employers want to know that you have a degree. Some fields are more particular about schools such as medical, but many don't care.

I think that some online schools are not accredited. That is what you would want to watch for. It would be much more difficult to continue on to a Masters or Doctorate from a non-accredited school. I am not sure if Kaplan is accredited or not. Great question!
