10 Animes to Watch Like Naruto and Bleach

Anime Like Naruto and Bleach

Most anime fans have seen (and loved) Bleach and Naruto. These are classics. What some fans may not realize is that there are other series out there that are just as good, just less well-known. I've put together a short list of anime that I like just as much as Bleach and Naruto. Enjoy!

1. Fate Stay Night

Fate Stay Night revolves around a high school student named Shirō Emiya who lives in Fuyuki City. Shirō gets involved in a fight-to-the-death tournament called the Fifth Holy Grail War.

Fuyuki City is where magi fight for the Holy Grail. Every sixty years, seven sorcerers put their life on the line to obtain the Holy Grail, which will grant the winner's wish.

Shirō was the sole survivor of a fire that broke out in his city. As a child he was taken in by a retired magus named Kiritsugu Emiya, who passed away years later. He deeply respected his adopted father and developed a strong sense of justice. One evening in his high school, he witnesses two powerful men exchanging blows with swords and spears. The spear wielder, known as Llancer, wants to kill Shirō as he suspects him to be the final participant of the Fifth Holy Grail War. As Lancer is about to finish him off, Shirō manages to summon his servant, Saber, to save him. As he summons Saber, Shirō enters the Holy Grail War as the final master. Saber is a well-known figure in history, created to help the participants of the Holy Grail War. Saber won the Fourth Holy Grail War with another Master.

The journey begins just as the Fifth Holy Grail War starts. Will Shirō be able to win the Holy Grail with the help of Saber?

2. Full Metal Alchemist

Edward Elric and his younger brother Alphonse Elric are alchemists from Amestris. They were living a happy life until their mother Trisha died from a terminal disease. Edward vowed to bring his mother back to life using alchemy. Edward and Alphonse work hard and learn alchemy from their teacher, Izumi Curtis. Soon they begin to study human transmutation, which is a forbidden art used to create or revive a human being.

Unfortunately, the transmutation fails and results in a dysfunctional creature that lived a few seconds and destroys Edward's left leg and Alphonse's entire body. Edward desperately tries to save his brother, sacrificing his right arm to put Alphonse's soul in an armor suit. Days after the incident, a powerful alchemist named Roy Mustang visits the brothers and suggests that Edward become a State Alchemist in exchange for more information to restore his arm and Alphonse's body.

The journey begins as they search for answers.

3. Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin in the Meija Era. Rurouni is a wanderer, but also a former assassin known as "Hitokiri Battōsai." He decides to atone his sins by offering aid to those in need of his services.

Rurouni meets a young woman named Kamiya Kaoru who was fighting with a murderer who claims to be the Hitokiri Battōsai. Rurouni decides to help Kamiya and defeat the fake Battōsai. Kamiya then finds out that Rurouni is the real one, and offers to let him stay at her Dojo.

Several months later, Rurouni finds out that his successor assassin, Shishio Makoto, plans to conquer Japan by decimating the Meiji government. With the help of his friends in the Dojo he sets out to look for Shishio.

4. Hunter X Hunter

Hunter X Hunter follows a kid named Gon Freecss. Gon was told at a young age that he both his parents are dead and that he is an orphan. However he finds out from Kite that his father, Ging,is still alive and is a very skilled hunter.

Hunters are elite members of humanity, capable of tracking down secret treasures and rare beasts. Inspired by the news that his father is among this special group, Gon takes the Hunter Examination to be like his dad. His journey begins as he is about to take the test.

5. Claymore

Claymore is extremely violent and bloody compared to the other anime series that I have recommended. So proceed at your own risk!

Claymore takes place in medieval times. Humans are plagued by the Yoma, beings that can shape-shift into humans and then feed on them. A secret group known as the "The Organization" decides to breed human-Yoma hybrids to combat real Yomas for a fee. These human-Yoma hybrids wear Roman-style uniforms and are also known as "Silvered-eye Witches" who carry the Claymores so they can slay Yomas.

Claymore warriors and Yoma alike are powered by demonic energy known as Yoki, which allows for extraordinary strength and shape-shifting. When the Claymore warrior uses too much Yoki, they "awaken." Once awake, they lose their place as a warrior and become a very powerful Yoma, which other Claymore warriors will have to kill before they become too powerful.

The story starts with Clare, a Claymore warrior who saves a boy from a Yoma. Her mission is to kill a certain awakened being.

6. Gintama

The story begins in Edo (the ancient name for Japan). In Gintama Edo has been conquered by aliens called "Amanto." Samurai warriors fight the aliens, but fail. After that, swords are banned from use.

The main character, Gintoki Sakata, helps a teenager named Shinpachi and her sister Tae from aliens. Shinpachi is indebted to Gintoki and is impressed with his abilities. He becomes Gintoki's apprentice and works for him to help pay the rent. Together they save a teenage alien girl named Kagura from gangsters who wanted to use her superhuman strength to kill people. Kagura decides to help them and the trio becomes "Yorozuya," and fight for good. Sometimes they partner with the police to hunt down criminals.

7. Blood+

The plot of Blood+ revolves around a teenage girl named Saya Otonashi. She is adopted and has amnesia. She is attacked by a bat-like creature called a Chiropteran and regains her memories. She realizes that she survives on the blood of others but that she also has the unique ability to kill Chiropterans. With the help of her adopted brothers, her faithful chevalier, and her protector from the powerful Red Shield, she fights to rid the world of Chiropterans.

8. Inuyasha

Fifteen-year-old Kagome Higurashi lives with her family. One day, when Kagome goes to the well in her family's Shinto shrine to get her cat, a centipede demon jumps out of the well and pulls her in. Kagome emerges out of the well, finding herself in the Sengkou period of ancient Japan. The demon's attack placed a "Sacred Jewel of the Four Souls" in her. The demon tries to kill her but, in a desperate attempt to save herself, Kagome releases the half dog-half human demon InuYasha to defeat the centipede. During the fight, the "Sacred Jewel of the Four Souls" is shattered into shards and spread throughout Japan. The shards hold tremendous power and are highly sought-after by both humans and demons. We follow Kagome and Inuyasha on their journey to collect the jewel shards.

9. Samurai Champloo

Fuu works as a waitress in a tea shop. One day she is harassed by some Samurais but is saved by Mugen and Jin. When Mugen sees Jin as a worthy opponent, they begin fighting and a magistrate's son is killed during their fight. Mugen and Jin are about to be executed for their crime when Fuu saves them. In return, Fuu asks them to help her find the "Samurai who smell of sunflowers."

10. Shakugan no Shana

Shakugan no Shana takes place in a universe parallel to the human world. The Crimson Realm is populated with Crimson Denizens who are able to manipulate the Power of Existence. This is the basic power of any human being and functions as "fuel" for one's existence.

A high school student named Yuji Sakai is thrown into a conflict between powerful Crimson Denizens and Lords of the Crimson Realm. Denizens who do not care about the balance between the Crimson Realm and human world collect Power of Existence from humans for their own selfish purposes. Some Lords of the Crimson Realm work with humans to become the Flame Haze, who strive to maintain the balance of the two realms by destroying any Denizens who threaten to upset the balance. Flame Haze and Denizens fight with a powerful magic called "Powers of Unrestraint." When Yuji becomes involved, he meets a member of the Flame Haze, a girl named Shana.

I'm not usually a fan of the traditional Shonen series with overpowered characters, but I was a Hug fan of InuYasha back in the day. I also enjoy the Hayate Combat Butler Manga, but have yet to see the anime.

Please don't tell people to actually watch Fate/Stay Night. If anything, they should be watching its movie or Fate/Zero, or checking out the original visual novel, but the Fate/Stay Night anime was a travesty that offended me on every intellectual level. (I even wrote a review on it! /shamelessplug)

Also, some of these titles (Fate, Fullmetal Alchemist, Claymore) really aren't all that similar to Naruto or Bleach--rather, I would've expected YuYu Hakusho, One Piece, and Soul Eater to be here instead.

Would have to agree with Zelkiiro on One Piece and Soul Eater.

Gintama is okay there though :)

In that list, the anime that I most enjoyed watching was Full Metal Alchemist but the Brotherhood version. Kenchin wacthed when I was a child and I don't remember so good. In Shakugan no Shana I didn't watch the 3rd season yet so I can't tell my opinion, but you have a good hub here!
