Sophia Loren's early life

Italian actress Sophia Loren was born in Rome on September 20, 1934. Raised in poverty, she began her film career in 1951 and came to be regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful women. Loren won the Best Actress Academy Award for the film Two Women in 1961 and an Academy Honorary Award in 1991. Married to producer Carlo Ponti for 50 years until his death in 2007, Loren lives in Geneva, Switzerland.

Inside this brief biography the phrase, “(Sophia Loren) regarded as one of the world’s most-beautiful women.” I agree with this statement, and if you are a red-blooded, American male, you do too. And why not? Sophia Loren was born with more than her share of natural beauty—perfect facial features, eyes, lips and everything in creation that makes a woman beautiful.

Beautiful many times does not mean humble. But in Loren’s life and career, she was known for her humble spirit, never thinking that her fame and fortune did not make her any higher in life than the lowest peasant. She did not have to advertise her fine qualities, for they went ahead of her everywhere she went. From the numerous films she made to the numerous interviews she made, she was always the same gorgeous actress who was so grateful to be doing what she loved: Films and entertaining people.

Truth is hard to face

Sadly, we all have to grow into adulthood and leave the care-free days of our youth behind. And with this painful growth, comes many harsh realities about life and people that we as youth never dreamed possible.

I have to admit it here and now. The “Glamorous Goddess,” Sophia Loren was not all that I had dreamed she was. In her were flaws. I hate to say that. But it is true. As in all of us mortals, we all have flaws, but I never thought in my wildest imagination that I would someday being saying about my female idol, Sophia Loren, that there are—

I'm with you Kenneth. Even all those flaws doesn't change my mind that Sophia Loren was/is one of the most beautiful and humble actresses of all time. Funny hub, but not exactly what I was expecting. Nice choice if pics too. ps. Are you sure she was never in Mr Ed?

Hey Ken, This was very interesting. It was just good to see her pics thatt you displayed. She was one classy actress. Her loveliness makes up for any flaw she's ever had. This was quite entertaining.

Kenneth, How did you ever come up those 15 things lol!! As for me all of those things can surely be overlooked. Wonderful picture of this beautiful icon of the movies. As always thanks for a most interesting read :)

I always fancied Ms. Loren as a child. Never passed on an opportunity to watch her movies. But now she's my competition. My husband adores her! :) Great HUB! Voted UP and shared via Pinterest. I collect BIO-Snapshots.

Not a thing about dragonflies.....gasp! You are hilarious, and this chuckle was much appreciated.

RockyMountainMom,

Right. I was as stunned as you were. When Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe could hold their own with information about dragonflies at cocktail parties, I was sad to learn that Sophia never took the time to learn about these beautiful insects.

Shame.

Thanks for stopping by and visiting me. Come back often.

cmoneyspinner1tf,

Thank you sincerely for your comment. Competition? Are you serious? I do not think you have a thing to worry about. I think you are very pretty. And besides Sophia would have to have a translator in order to talk to me.

You have a safe night and talk to me again.

Dear Catherine,

I agree with you. She WAS born with beauty and she is still beautiful, but truthfully, she lives in a higher level of life than I do, so I have to aspirations as to fly to Italy and have a meeting with her.

I do wish she would learn about college football.

Come back to visit me anytime.

Hi, esmonaco,

I agree. These 15 things CAN be overlooked because her beauty and charm override them, but if you notice the 15 things--they are all of simplicity. Not tough things. Oh my! What if she is a genius and understands everything about QuantumPhysics? Boy will I look stupid.

Come back to visit me anytime.

word55,

Thank you for your comments on this hub and photos. Oh, you didn't appreciate the dragonfly? LOL.

I had to search hard and long to find just the right photos of her because she deserves great photos because after all, she is a famous woman.

And God bless you for commenting.

Hello, my friend, Jodah,

You too are right on how her beauty is more obvious and important than her wisdom of these 15 things. Even when she is apparently-lacking in some area, she is still able to overcome it easily.

And even without knowing that she was being written about.

What a lady.

What will I say if she calls? Would you act as my translator?

minababe . . .

I thank you for your question/comment, so understand, my Italian is a bit rusty, so here goes.

"Sophia, what is that animal?"

SOPHIA: "Meeeeuuueeeellllleee,"

Wow, you say that with such grace, I am in tears.

kenneth avery profile image

kenneth avery 2 years ago from Hamilton, Alabama Author

Dear Deborah,

Okay. I am willing to compromise. If Sophia learns how to pronounce MULE, I will erase all of these DON'T likes from my mind.

Thanks for your sweet comment.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia

I'll do my best to translate Kenneth, though my knowledge of Italian consists of being able to interpret hand gestures.

minababe 2 years ago

@Kenneth Avery: "Meeeeuuueeeellllleee"? Ouch! Was she actually trying to pronounce the word, "mule", or trying to imitate the sound of one braying, lol?

Jodah,

The job is YOURS. Thanks, good friend, for the input. I am glad that I can depend on you.

@minababe,

LOL! You have a razor-sharp sense of humor. To be honest, I think it was a little of both. You see, in Italy, they have donkeys and burrows, not mules like we use in America, so I understand her difficulty in pronouncing MULE.

But I LOVED your comment. You made me laugh and smile. Both I have needed all day.

K.

Nice un's , Kenneth. I'll add just two: Sophia didn't like Al "Ed O'Neill" Bundy's onetime scene with her in a movie and Sophia got pissed at all-American Jayne Mansfield party crashing her table in that famous 1957 pic with bigger un's.

kenneth avery profile image

kenneth avery 2 years ago from Hamilton, Alabama Author

Ahhhh, my friend, Alastar,

What a sharp writer and researcher you are. I mean it. That would have been a GREAT addition to my list of things I do not like about Sophia. Thanks for the comment, and FYI, Jayne was also one of my faves.

Sad that she is gone.

Thank you, Kenneth. Love ol' Jayne we do and what a tragedy with her life. She should have taken that role on Gilligan's Island instead of later getting mixed-up with Anton LaVay. Sometimes hind-sight doesn't come quick enough for 20/20. Sigh......the altar-cult of celebrity and ego.

I love her film with Marcello Mastroianni "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" Great hub :) Read it with interest.

It is nice to know a star like Sophie can not hum the tune to “Popeye, The Sailor Man. :)

kenneth avery 2 years ago from Hamilton, Alabama Author

Hi, bibilopola,

Sophia was certainly a fine actress, or today, actor. And a lovely woman. I feel like you do. You and I, along with thousands can whistle or sing Popeye's song, but poor Sophia. We still love her though. Thank you for the wonderful comment.

Hello, Alastar,

You are right. If Jayne had used her head, no pun intended, she might have been here today.

Do you know any hubbers who have written about building a "Do It Yourself, Backyard Time Machine?" You and I could really put that one to good use and please, no Bill and Ted references.

First stop. Jayne Mansfield's mansion for some tea and talk.

Well Kenneth you have cheered me up today - I had no idea I had so much in common with Sophia - apart from the tap dancing I'm a bit more like Ginger Rogers in that field ( I wish!!) - she feels like a sister now :)

kenneth avery 2 years ago from Hamilton, Alabama Author

Hi, Adventuretravels,

I am so glad that something I had to do with, made YOU happy. Now I am happy. This is the goal of my time on Hubs, to make you and my other followers happy if only for a fleeting moment.

In that absolute moment in time, if you laugh, you are not crying and down and out.

I had much rather enter eternity knowing that I have made ONE person happy than to acknowledge that I hurt 50 people.

Have a great night and thank you much for the comment.

You and Sophia, sisters, I love it.

I don´t mind if Sophia Loren can´t do the 15 things you mentioned. Nobody is perfect. I still love her films and she´s beautiful. Thanks for making me laugh. Have a nice day!

kenneth avery profile image

kenneth avery 2 years ago from Hamilton, Alabama Author

Dear Thelma,

You are very perceptive in knowing that this was in comedy. Sophia IS a beautiful woman, but still, she cannot do most of the things in this list and I would donate $100.00 to a favorite charity if she would put on an exhibition of showing me that she would try to do these.

Sounds fair to me. Right?

Cute Hub! I got a chuckle out of it and suspected it was a sly joke as soon as I read your first reason. I mean, seriously, who doesn't love Sophia Loren! She still looks great for being 80.

Dear Danette,

LOL! I am busted. You are right. I appreciate you stopping by and commenting. I confess. I DO love this woman, but she will never know it. So if you talk to her, do not tell. Shhhhh!

Sophia Loren displayed true courage in an attempted kidnapping of her and her half sister right on the cusp of her highly successful career. The would be abductors botched the attempt by a combination of Miss Loren's driving skills and a police road block that happened to be in place for a separate incident.

Kenneth Avery 15 months ago

You are most-correct. Sophia Loren was far more than just a pretty face. She was empowered, confident and way ahead of her time.

I miss her sultry movies with gents like Cary Grant, Bob Hope and such.

Thanks for your comment and have a safe comment.

Kenneth Avery 15 months ago

Dear limpet,

This is my second reply to your comment. I agree with you. She was one courageous woman-impaired, strong, and very intelligent.

I am glad that Sophia set the standard for women herself by inventing herself into more than being "just" a sex symbol.

Come back anytime.

ahorseback,

Yep. Cannot argue with you on that. But what normal, red blooded man who appreciates beautiful women, not as sex toys or livestock, but as wonderful creations of God, would argue?
