20 Songs Produced by the Neptunes to Start Your Collection: Vol 1
Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are the "Neptunes"
The hit machines (Super Producers) known as the “Neptunes” ruled the airwaves around the turn to the 21st century. Whether it was an up and coming artist, or a veteran trying to claw their way back into rotation, all roads led to Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo if they wanted a chart topper. The unique sound of outer space synth mixed with snare drums and catchy hooks sung by Pharrell and Kelis became a universally recognized sound.
The Neptunes did not box themselves into the established sound of the era. They were not afraid to go far beyond the limits of what people were used to hearing. This is evident with the production of Kelis’ hit “Caught Out There (I Hate You So Much Right Now)”. In this song, Kelis screams the chorus like a mad woman to a spaced out beat. In another classic hit “Grinding” (perfomed by the Clipse), the Neptunes creatively wove gunshot sounds into a drumbeat.”
Early hits like ODB’s “Baby I Got Your Money” and Ludacris’ “Southern Hospitality” put the Neptunes on the map. However, it wasn’t until Jay-Z’s iconic hit “Give it to Me”, that people started asking “who is that man that is singing the hook?” Artists began asking the Neptunes to create them a song that sounds like “X” and has Pharrell singing in it. The thought is “why deviate from the formula if this is what works?”
The Neptunes’ collaborations read as a list of who’s who in the music industry. Some the artists include Sade, Gwen Stefani, Jay Z, Usher, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Nas, and Ludacris. Their catalogue of hits seems to stretch more than a mile long. In fact this list is so long, it may be easier to ingest by giving it to you in doses. In honor of coining the new term Neptunes-olgy:
