2G spectrum scam in India

Different Twists and Turns in 2G Spectrum Case

Took heavy toll of the DMK

The 2G spectrum scam had taken a heavy toll of the erstwhile DMK Government in Tamil Nadu and affected the popularity of DMK also. There is a deep suspicion among the leaders of the Congress Party that their party may meet a similar fate because of the intensification of the 2G spectrum case. Congress tried to present an impression to the people of India that the erstwhile telecom minister A. Raja, who belonged to the DMK Party, alone was responsible for the 2G spectrum scam and that the Congress was not connected with it. Initially the Congress was successful in presenting this view and making the people believe it.

Latest letter exposes the Congress’ involvement in the scandal

But the latest letter written by the Finance Ministry under the guidance of the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has exposed the Congress. The letter categorically stated that had the erstwhile Finance Minister P. Chidambaram wanted, he could have prevented this scandal taking place. The 2G spectrum scam involved an amount of Rs.176000 crore. This letter has created a new controversy. The Congress needed several days to settle this matter. In the end, people of India have been left with a suspicion that the Congress was trying to hide something from the nation.

Open secret

It is not news that P. Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee are at loggerheads with each other. It is an open secret known all over the world. Whenever opportunity arose, the two had been trying to pull each others’ legs. For example, Pranab Mukherjee has been assigned the job of negotiating with those who demand a separate State of Telangana. But without consulting Pranab Mukherjee, P. Chidambaram announced in the mid night that separate Telangana will be granted. This became a sore point for Pranab Mukherjee.

It could have been Chidambaram’s mischief

Chidambaram also is of the habit of criticising the economic performance of the government (read Finance Ministry functioning under Pranab Mukherjee). Chidambaram had also harshly criticised the finance ministry for soaring food inflation. Chidambaram chose to air his criticism in public. Pranab Mukherjee also paid Chidambaram back in the same coin. Sometime back, there were many posters all over the walls of Delhi city demanding that Pranab Mukherjee be made as the Prime Minister of India. Pranab Mukherjee realised that this was a clever act done by somebody who wanted to present him very badly to the Congress High Command and to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Pranab Mukherjee suspected Chidambaram to be the person behind this act and he even expressed his suspicion openly to the Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

Pranab Mukherjee drags Chidambaram’s name deliberately

Recently when lot of confusion was created about the way the fasting of Anna Hazare, the social activist was handled by the government. When reporters raised questions about this, the other ministers put the blame on the Delhi police. But Pranab Mukherjee asked the reporters to get the answer from Chidambaram. In other words, Pranab Mukherjee dragged Chidambaram’s name into the controversy. What is the reason for the animosity between Pranab Mukherjee and Chidambaram? This is nothing but a power struggle between the two leaders.

Communists want Congress to return to power to save secularism

The Congress is confident of being returned to power in the next parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in 2014. Congress leaders are sure that in the 2014 elections, secularism versus communalism slogan is going to be very effective. The Congress is going to project the principal opposition party BJP as the villain of the Muslims and anti secular. They will vigorously indulge in the propaganda that it was the BJP leaders who pulled down the Babri Mosque. The Congress is also going to promise the Muslims that it will rebuild the Babri Mosque if re-elected to power. Congress will also ensure that the Pakistani terrorist Kasab is not hanged at least till elections for catching the minority vote banks. The communists also want the Congress to be returned to power at the centre. Already communist leaders like Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechuri have asked the communist cadres to work vigorously to ensure the defeat of the BJP in the 2014 elections and to make Congress return to power. The communists feel that the Muslims will not be safe under the BJP rule. Even though they are opposed to the economic and nuclear policies of the Congress, the communists consider Congress as most secular outfit, capable of ensuring the religious rights to the Muslims. All these things, the Congress feels, will return the Congress to power with a thumping majority. At that time, Manmohan Singh will be too old to continue in power. Therefore Pranab Mukherjee and Chidambaram are indulging in street fights now itself in order to sit in the Prime Minister’s throne. In my opinion, all these fights are going to be a waste as the people of India will vote for the BJP and defeat Congress in the next elections.

Chidambaram could have planted it

But strictly speaking it is not a duel between Pranab Mukherjee and Chidambaram alone. It is a fight among the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukherjee and Chidambaram because Manmohan Singh is also in the race for the Prime Minister’s post again. Eavesdropping electronic equipments were secretly planted inside Pranab Mukherjee’s room in the North Block. Pranab Mukherjee complained about this to the Prime Minister. But Manmohan Singh did not even order a formal enquiry. An enquiry was conducted for the name sake and the purpose was to hide everything. There is a mutual animosity and distrust among the three top leaders of the Congress government namely Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister Chidambaram.

Prime minister asked for the letter?

It was initially believed that the letter that originated from the finance ministry was written under the dictates of the finance minister and his senior officers. But later on it was exposed that the letter was prepared to be used by the Prime Minister’s Office. This fact was exposed by none other than Pranab Mukherjee himself. He created a turning point in the 2G spectrum case through this exposure. Through this exposure, Pranab Mukherjee also shifted the blame for writing the controversial letter on the Prime Minister, exonerating himself in the process. In other words, Pranab Mukherjee made it clear that it was not he but the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who dragged Chidambaram’s name in the 2G spectrum scandal.

Prime Minister implicates Chidambaram

It is also reported that Pranab Mukherjee had chided his First Secretary T K A Nair for trying to foster enmity between him and Chidambaram. It is also reported that he had written to Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan about this through letters. It is also reported that Pranab Mukherjee expressed this view clearly during the meeting among himself, Chidambaram, Manmohan Singh and T K A Nair. Pranab Mukherjee’s direct chiding of T K A Nair is an indirect scolding of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself in this matter. Already Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had dragged Chidambaram’s name in the 2G spectrum scandal. While answering to the reporters in the beginning of the current year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stated in an unambiguous tone that when the Finance Ministry headed by Chidambaram had permitted Raja (erstwhile telecom minister) to go ahead with the spectrum allotment, he could do little in the matter. In other words, Manmohan Singh clearly stated that under the then Finance Minister Chidambaram’s supervision only the 2G spectrum was allotted by Raja.

Chidambaram denies it

But immediately after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement, Chidambaram stated that he had written a letter to the Prime Minister expressing his disapproval in the decision taken by Raja to auction the spectrum. He showed a copy of his letter to the reporters also. The person who used the Right to Information Act to procure information about 2G spectrum scandal never asked for the letter written by the Finance Ministry to the Prime Minister, implicating Chidambaram. Inspite of this, the important and controversial letter was leaked out. This had led to big controversy and embarrassment to the government. Deliberately some vested party had played this mischief to embarrass Chidambaram and the Prime Minister.

Noose may tighten around Sonia’s necks

Sonia Gandhi involved herself in pacifying the warring parties and finally put to rest this matter. But the matter is not yet laid to full rest. Any time it may start haunting the Congress leaders again. Supreme Court is yet to pronounce its verdict on the petition demanding investigation of Chidambaram’s role in the 2G matter. 2G, which was haunting only the DMK Party and the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu, is now spreading its tentacles and consuming more and more people in Congress Party. If this goes unchecked, it may tighten its noose around Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi not long before.
