31 Movies To Get You In The Mood For Halloween

Monster Mash

Halloween is a time for knocking on strangers’ doors and practicing your begging skills, slashing evil faces into poor innocent pumpkins, dressing like your favorite weirdo (or naughty nurse), and forcing your little sister to watch movies that will surely give her nightmares just so you can avoid being scared alone (ahem, my siblings).

Once I got too old to trick-or-treat on October 31st every year, I decided the best way to celebrate the ghoulish holiday was to freak myself out by spending the entire day watching a horror movie marathon—without any unwilling participants.  Over the years, I’ve seen some really great scary movies like Halloween, and some not-so-great ones.  Not all horror movies are created equally, as there are several sub-genres such as slasher, supernatural, torture, and even comedy.  Personally I prefer the classics, but occasionally a recent release will make my heart pound with fear (or at least a nervous giggle).

Here are 31 scary movies off the top of my head, in no particular order, to help get you in the mood for the big fright night.  Some of these are seriously chill inspiring, while others are just seriously entertaining (I’m looking at you Freddy!).

What, no Sci Fi? What about Alien? The Thing?

There's also The Hitcher (Rutger Hauer version).

And, the horrible (in all senses of the word) Murder by Phone and The House.

They crossed my mind, but there are too many sub-genres! I think I'll have to come out with a second list...
