A Concert With Tomas Ledin - Bruce Springsteen Of Sweden
Jakobstad Is A Small Town
The nearest town to were I live is called Jakobstad (Swedish name) or Pietarsaari (Finnish name). It's a small town with a population of 20 000 situated on the west coast of Finland. Nothing really happens in this town except in summertime. Local bands are often playing during the summer and we sometimes have Swedish artists performing here.
Last Saturday there was a concert in Jakobstad outside an old factory that's called ”Strengbergs”. They used to make tobacco here and it was the pride of the town. Many people worked at Strengbergs. Now the house is being renovated and there are mostly offices in the old tobacco factory.
A Short History Of The Tobacco Factory
Strengbergs - the factory, was founded in 1762. During the 19th century, the factory was the biggest employer in town. During the 1920's Strengbergs wasn't only the largest tobacco factory in Finland, but the largest in the Nordic countries. The factory was finally sold to Swedish Match. Strengbergs chapter as a tobacco factory finally came to an end as late as in year 1998. Strengbergs is now 250 years old.

My Kind Of Music
This concert I went to with my spouse Magnus last Saturday, was something I had been waiting for for a long time. Finally I was going to hear and see the one and only Tomas Ledin. He is a Swedish singer that has been singing since the 1970's. He has now turned 60 years old, been performing for 40 years and is more popular than ever before. I have never seen a man in his age with that kind of energy on a stage singing wonderful songs that reach out to so many people. Just like all the other times, he did not disappoint his audience this time either.
I went to this concert with excitment. When we got there, I realized that most of the people in the audience were much older than me. I also realized that I'm probably born 2o years too late. Or maybe it's just my taste of music that is different from people in my age. I don't really care. I used to care what people thought about me. Now I have the confidence to say what I like and what I don't. I like Tomas Ledin and his music. It's something I grew up with and it's something I will continue listening too.

An Enjoyable Life
The older he gets, the better Tomas Ledin and his music get. He recently said in an interview that he has never felt this good before. Maybe you have to reach a certain age and do certain things before you realize how good life is. I hope I can live that long to really enjoy everything I do in life to the fullest. This makes me think of my friend Bill. That seems to be what this singer does. You can actually see how happy this man is. He simply shines and his concert was amazing. He put his soul into every word he was singing. The people in the audience were singing, clapping their hands and the whole concert was the most enjoyable hours in my life this summer. It will be something to remember for a long time. Being there with Magnus was special too. We never spend time together without our children. This evening we did and I was really happy to have him standing by my side for five ours on the same spot. He is not that excited about Tomas Ledin as I am. That's why Magnus is amazing too.
There were only 2 500 people in the audience, but all the tickets were sold out. In this case you have to remember it's a small town. Tomas Ledin sings in Swedish and I guess most of his audience here in Finland is Swedish speaking too. Tomas Ledin is becoming a legend in Sweden and the surrounding countries. The past spring he has had his own show in Gothenburg, Sweden, to celebrate his 40th year as a musician. The coming fall he will have the same show in Stockholm, Sweden. It has been a success so far and I'm sure this man will keep on rocking for a long time to come.
Fredrik Furu And Sara Varga Singing Together
Two Singers Warmed Up The Audience
Two artists were going to perform before Tomas Ledin took place on stage this evening in Jakobstad. The first singer was Fredrik Furu. He is born in Jakobstad and also grew up here. For many years he has been into the music business and he has written several albums. He is popular in the Swedish speaking parts of Finland and he now lives in Stockholm, Sweden. That's the place to be if you want to reach out to a bigger audience. Just like Tomas Ledin, Fredrik Furu sings in Swedish. He still has a long way to go before he becomes famous, but he is a good singer and also a good representative in Sweden for the small town of Jakobstad. Fredrik Furu performed songs on the stage, told some personal stories from the past and really warmed up the whole audience. People were getting in the right mood before it was time for Tomas Ledin.
After Fredrik Furu had performed, a Swedish female singer entered the stage. Her name is Sara Varga and she is a rising star in the Swedish music business. She isn't yet very well known in Finland, but I think she's getting there. I think this was her second time performing in Finland. Sara Varga said she didn't know much about Finland before she came here for the first time last winter. She was surprised that people here were so friendly. Many Swedes don't know that we are a small group of people in Finland speaking Swedish and that we sometimes know more about Sweden than our own country. Maybe we are different from the Finnish speaking people. I think that's the case here on the west coast. In southern Finland there's also Swedish speaking people, but I think their culture is a little different from ours. Sara Varga also sings in Swedish just like Fredrik Furu and Tomas Ledin. Sara Varga and Fredrik Furu performed a couple of songs together. They had not been practising them together before, but it was a really good performance and a good warm up before the ”real concert” bagan.
Tomas Ledin Singin In Front Of His Audience In Jakobstad
The Connection Between Two Great Singers
Finally, at 10 pm, when Tomas Ledin entered the stage, I had been standing on the same spot in front of the stage for almost three hours. The next two ours were going to be enjoyable and amazing. It was well worth the wait.
I had this wonderful singer Tomas Ledin performing just a few meters in front of me. I enjoyed every second and he really knew how to reach out the his audience. It had been ten years since he had been in this town last time except two years ago when he had a small concert here without his band. This concert I went to now felt like a world class concert in a small town. It was very professional. I really think Sweden has their own Bruce Springsteen and his name is Tomas Ledin. I hope he plays in Finland soon again or I'll have to chase him through Sweden.
Tomas Ledin was interviwed by a Swedish newspaper recently. He said that Bruce Springsteen actually borrowed his apartment in 1988, when he was in Sweden. Springsteen said he needed some private space and Ledin said he could stay at his place. Tomas Ledin left one of his English albums he had made in his apartment while Springsteen was there. Tomas Ledin's album was called ”The Human Touch”. A few years later Bruce Springsteen released the Album ”Human Touch”.
You never know if this is a true story or not, but it would be nice if it actually was. Maybe Tomas Ledin could have been big in the rest of Europe and the world if he would have been singing more songs in English. On the other hand, he would probably not be the person he is today. We'd like to keep Tomas Ledin here in northern Europe and his Swedish songs are fantastic. He is a living legend in the music business.
Allsång På Skansen
Tomas Ledin Is Popular
Every Tuesday night during summer, thousands of Swedes go to "Skansen" in Stockholm to experience "Allsång På Skansen", where artists perform and sing, and also song together with the audience. Every Tuesday night 25 percent of Sweden's population is sitting at home in the front of their televisons to watch this program that's broadcasted live. Some weeks ago Tomas Ledin was there to sing a medley of some of his songs.
