A Walk to Skelwith Bridge in the Lake District

Elterwater Lake

The Lake District in Cumbria

The Lake District in Cumbria, is one of the most popular scenic holiday destinations in England. It is a National Park in the North West and covers an area of 885 square miles.

Although the Lake District is renown for it’s wet weather, it doesn’t deter the enthusiastic walker. The breathtaking scenic mountains and lakes are a magnet to all who are prepared to face the good ole British weather!

This was my first visit to the Lake District, with my husband, sister and brother in law. We went in the month of May and certainly experienced the very changeable British weather. Plenty of sunshine and rain and May turned out to be the wettest on record!

Undeterred we donned our walking boots and waterproofs and started walking……

We visited some of the big lakes, saw some of the bigger mountains and drove some pretty scary roads, all very impressive!

But my most memorable and enjoyable walk was from the small village where we stayed and was a round trip of just 3 miles.

The Britannia Inn - Elterwater

We stayed at the Britannia Inn, a traditional Cumbrian Inn in the pretty village of Elterwater. It’s situated in the breathtaking Langdale Valley which is at the heart of the Lake District.

I Recomment the Walk to Skelwith Bridge from Elterwater

After a day out exploring, our walk ended abruptly in a terrific hail storm and we returned to the Britannia Inn late afternoon, to wonderful sunshine.

The blue sky and sun was more than we could resist and we decided to go for a walk in the village.

From the River Brathay which flows through the village was a signpost to Skelwith Bridge 1.5 miles. As we were a little weary after a day walking we felt this was still within our capabilities and set off!

Open Meadows and Stunning Views

We’d expected a riverside walk to Skelwith Bridge and were pleasantly surprised to see so much more!

Stunning views of the Langdale Pikes as a backdrop, to the open meadows filled with the hardy Cumbrian sheep grazing was a idyllic and peaceful sight.

Wild Garlic Growing in the Woodland

We followed the path along the River Brathay through the woods and suddenly the air was filled with the smell of garlic!

Looking around, I was amazed to see the woods were a carpet of wild garlic and after the recent rainfall the scent of garlic had intensified. Small streams trickled through the flowers, it was quite beautiful!

At the end of the woods, we opened a gate and gasped in delight at the sight before us. As you can see from the photos, it's quite beautiful.

A View to Remember

The shores of Elterwater lake has many small bays with a mix of wooded and reedy shorelines. The pathway led through an open meadow with sheep quietly grazing.

The trees were breathtakingly beautiful in their spring colours, which were every bit as vibrant as autumn colour.

And there to our delight was a perfectly placed bench!

We sat awhile and enjoyed the moment, eventually my sister was the first to speak “When we are having a bad day, we just have to remember this view”

Skelwith Force Waterfall

Reluctantly, we eventually dragged ourselves away from this idyllic spot and continued our walk through the open meadows.

Suddenly we could hear the rush of water, as the River Brathay and Langdale Beck met. This forms the Skelwith Force, a fifteen foot high waterfall which has thrust a dramatic passage through the rocks.

Skelwith Bridge

We had now reached the hamlet of Skelwith, which is well known for it’s local green/blue slate and of course Skelwith Bridge!

I was intrigued by this row of cottages overlooking the river and the amount of chimneys!

By now the weather had changed again and the sunshine had disappeared. An ideal opportunity to visit the riverside café here and enjoy a cup of coffee and wait for the sun to reappear for the walk back!

Lesley this has to be one of your best and most beautiful hubs to date - it was awesome! By the way I counted 18 chimneys??? LOL!

It's hard to choose a favourite from such a beautiful area but if pushed I would have to go for Skelwith Force Waterfall and Elterwater Lake. But the whole area is so very lovely - even if you have bad weather, who cares, with beauty like that surrounding you.

Wonderful hub + voted up!!

I love the Lake District! I'm probably the only American kid who read every Swallows and Amazons book over and over again, though. Ok, to be fair, I lived in the UK as a kid, but I continued reading the books long after moving back here. I still love those books and hope to make it back some day. When my family visited a few years after moving 'home,' the Lake District was our very first stop. We got off the plane, got in the rental car, and drove straight there.

Lesley, Thank you for taking us on such a lovely walk along lakes and rivers, over bridges, and through meadows and woodlands. Among my favorite photos (well, actually all of 'em are!) are the Cumbrian sheep who look as though they're aware of you all and trying to look pretty and smile for the camera. Also, I love the way your photography is so clean and clear that I feel like I can hear the current running through the waters of Brathay and Elterwater and Skelwith, smell the different body parts of the vegetation (here, wild garlic), and witness the breeze amongst the grasses and trees.

Up + UFABI.

Respectfully, and with many thanks, Derdriu

P.S. I count 18 chimneys!

How beautiful, I especially love the bridges and water, did you cross any of those? Wild garlic grows around me and you really know it on a hot mowing day! Great photography, all of it!

Hi Jackie, yes we crossed all the bridges!

I should imagine the garlic gets a little overpowering on a hot day!!

Many thanks for your comments, best wishes Lesley

I am flabbergasted that you were so close to where I now live. (Appleby in Westmorland, Cumbria)

Your photography is gorgeous - You clever woman.

If ever you are in the Lake District again, perhaps we could meet for coffee, somewhere. ????

Wonderful hub, voted up, awesome and beautiful.
