Machiko Noguchi

Part of the attraction to the AVP Universe has been the female lead in the ongoing saga from Dark Horse Comics. Lets begin with AVP Omnibus 1, which introduces us to the planet of Ryushi where humans come to mine and Hunters come to hunt. Either species is aware of each other until the arrival of the game. The human lead is a female, Machiko Noguchi. To find out more of how she teams up with the leader of the Yautja and earns her respect, well you have to read the Omnibus I don't want to give it all away ;).

As an avid female sci fi reader and writer I found her story intoxicating. Machiko is powerful, human and we got to follow her as she finds her humanity by losing it.

Finding her way

Just after losing a battle with Shorty, Machiko finds her way back to her quarters. There are many Hunters like Shorty that do not accept her as one of them.

Broken Tusk

Although referred to as Broken Tusk due to a broken mandible, his given name was Daschande which means "a different knife." He is a Yautja leader who maintains honor with deadly force. Although he has never killed a human, he is a deadly foe to the Xenomorphs. He kills with deadly precision, and leads with honor. During a passage on Ryushi, Broken Tusk was injured and nursed back to health by a human doctor.

When the Yautja tribe turned on the humans, as well as rampant Xeno's, the humans were in a lot of trouble. Broken Tusk aligned himself with Machiko, and together they defeated a Xeno queen. Broken Tusk marked Machiko as an honorable warrior of his tribe.

This is the story that intrigued me, as a fan. I understand the movie AVP was a reflection on this story, where those not familiar with the EU might not have understood how a cold killing machine such as a Predator would team up with a human. What human wouldn't want to be paired up side by side with the galaxy's greatest warrior?

The Alien Queen

In all of her glory in movies, the Alien (Xenomorph) Queen is a most feared monster. What the extended universe does for her is bring into the scene her role as a mother as well. We are introduced to this role somewhat in Aliens. There is a scene towards the end where the Xenomorph Queen allows Ripley to walk away from the hive when she threatened the eggs. If Ripley had just walked away instead of lighting the place on fire would the queen have chased after her? That is a question up for debate.

I see the Alien Queen as a mother, and as a mother she will do what is best for her children. In the Dark Horse Comics AVP, the queen is captured and her eggs are used to produce targets for the hunters. I can't help but feel sad for the Alien queen.

Fan Art

From the creative minds of talented fans of the franchise comes fan art. As much as we enjoy the stories, we also have a variety of ideas stemming from them. Some such fans are blessed with the gift of art and drawing. I enjoy seeing what others are dreaming and creating from this franchise.

*Disclaimer:I do not own any of this art, these are the wonderful creations of others collected over time.
