Adjustment Bureau, WTF?
Flipping through the channels I happened upon The Adjustment Bureau. A movie I remember hearing about when it first came out in March 2011, but didn’t care about much either way. The movie ended up getting a 2 1/2 stars on IO Cable and here are the 3reasons I think why:
1. The One Awkward Black Guy. I love Anthony Mackie; he feels genuine and nice. But he's kind of an awkward fit. Known as Harry in the film, he serves as the one mystery agent that seems to feel and thus question the greater powers that be. He lets his feelings get in the way and the other agents seem to continually chastise him for it. This weird isolation is further exaggerated by the super obvious fact that Harry is the only black character.
2. Matt Damon is normal. Maybe Matt played Jason Bourne for way too long, because I kept expecting him to spring into action and karate some assholes into the ground. But it never happens, and I get really sad when I remember “oh… Matt Damon’s normal…” In a mystery thriller I was hoping for some more thrills from the Jason Bourne I grew to love.
3. Mystery Thriller? Try Romance. Now, I’m not a hater of all romance movies (just most), but this movie calls itself a Mystery / Thriller movie. It kinda is with all these mysterious agents, “chairman” and ultimate “plan”, but really it’s about these two souls meant to be together. True love, as lovely as it is, is also a bit hokey – not the best mix with mystery and thrill.
Adjustment Bureau is just the kind of movie you can zone out to during a boring afternoon. It’s cute and entertaining enough to enjoy, but something you may not want to put under a magnifying glass.
